I have been advised by my consultant that following my hysterctomy that i had stage 2 womb cancer, it had also gone into my cervix.  During my pre op it was discussed that they may remove my lymph nodes and 1cm of the top of my vagina.  However, they felt during procedure there was no requirement to do so.  I also had a complete wash ( what is that and what does it do??)  I am now sceduled to have both treatments radiation wise.  Is this standard practice.  My question to the omcologist radiologist was "had they removed lymph nodes and top of vagina would i require the radiation treatment"  she said no.  Could anyone advise if they have experienced similiar.  Thank you

  • Hi KTE,

I haven't had any radiation treatment, but lots of women on here have. I had lymph nodes removed and a wash, both of which are fairly standard treatments. I think in all this the consultants try to preserve as much of you as they can whilst getting rid of the cancer. Radiation treatment is less invasive than an operation.

I am very sure that these days the treatment for cancer is far better than it used to be when I was a youngster (now 76). My grandad was diagnosed with throat cancer, had an operation, but no radiotherapy. (not invented 60 years ago) He never recovered. When my husband was diagnosed with the same disease my heart sank , but after an operation by laser, and radiotherapy, with all sorts of help he is still around 14 years later.

Trust in your consultants. They are very good these days. xxxxx

  • Hi KTE

I had a pelvic wash in which they basically flush a liquid through the pelvic cavity and analyse what comes out. That revealed I still had some malignant cells. My tumour had been a grade 1B stage 3 high grade serous. 6 Lymph nodes were removed and were clear and LVSI was zero. I was given the "optional extra" of 3 sessions of Brachytherapy as a "belt and braces" solution to prevent recurrence.  I finished my brachytherapy a month ago & feel fine. Due to see Oncologist in February.

    Hope this helps.

    Big hugs, Barb xx
