Constipation after surgery

Hi all, had my laparoscopic total hysterectomy on Tuesday. Supposed to be a day case but had low blood pressure post-op, so kept in overnight. Pain pretty well controlled on paracetamol and ibuprofen, but wanted to go to the loo yesterday. Despite trying not to strain, as recommended, could only manage to pass a peanut, but I’ve had lower abdomen pain since. Is this normal? My husband is going to the pharmacy today to ask if there’s anything I can take to help, does anyone else have any suggestions? TIA

  • Hi NewbieAndi,

I was aware of this potential problem and as soon as I got home I took Movical. My husband was told never to go more than 3 days without a bowel movement so I was prepared! He had a bad do after going 5 days. Passing a peanut is better than nothing. I think you will find the first movement hurts, but I found it Ok after that. It gradually settled down and I only needed the Movical once!

    Good luck. xxxx

  • Thank you, hopefully it’ll settle x

  • I was given a pack of laxative when I left hospital but my magic solution was that old favourite PRUNES!  Worked a treat....  and don't forget to drink plenty of water too.
