I was diagnosed with Lichen Sclerosus on 23rd December 2025. I'd had irritation just one side of the groin for a couple of months that I'd put down to the exercise bike, so stopped using that and it got worse rather than better. Then tried to get a GP appointment but nothing came up quickly so asked 111. By then my husband had looked at it and there was a red line and spots going down the inside of the left leg as well as red area. 111 said I needed a GP appointment sooner, so on the basis of did get one. It was diagnosed as thrush. I used the thrush cream and tablet, with it still getting worse, bought every other thrush treatment available but nothing worked. Couldn't get a GP appointment until 31st December so went to the walk in clinic where they said it wasn't thrush but to do a swab. Swab came back 'clear with no further action' but it clearly wasn't clear as it was getting worse and worse, so sore and itching. Back to the walk in clinic where it was diagnosed as Lichen Sclerosus and I was given a strong steroid cream - clobetasol. My husband has been applying this every day but told me he's avoided the area at the bottom of the vagina because I have a shelf pessary which moves throughout the day, sometimes higher and sometimes lower, and he's afraid the cream will go on that and it will deliver it to higher up in the vagina, thinning the skin there. The vaginal vault as well as front and back are prolapsed (I've had endometrial cancer as well as breast cancer). So I'm worried about the strong steroid going on prolapsed areas that sometimes come down a bit with the pessary as well. The skin is already atrophied around the pessary. But I'm so aware of the risk of subsequent cancer with Lichen Sclerosus so am thinking my husband needs to treat all visible areas even if they are slightly inside? Can anyone advise please. Thank you for any help you can offer.
Hello to you. I should go back to your GP for advice. I would not like to suggest anything in case it is the wrong information. I am sure the doctor can listen to your concerns and either allay your fears or, preferably, refer you to a hospital professional. It is better to be safe and get checked out. Sorry I cannot be of more help. Please keep in touch and let us know how things go.
Thank you so much for your reply. My GP is absolutely useless - she knows nothing about Lichen Sclerosus - she didn't even know it was a permanent condition or what to use for it BUT I do have a gynie appointment soon - a routine one to get the prolapse pessary changed, so I'll ask him. It was just what to do in the meantime about putting the cream closer to the bottom of the pessary (the 'handle bit) were it might get carried further up, but I don't see that I can ignore that area where it is red etc. so I'll use it in the meantime and hope for the best. I think the gynie will take this condition on and be able to advise. And I'll try not to panic until then. It feels a bit like between the devil and the deep blue sea - to avoid thinning skin in an area already with atrophy or to not treat it but be at higher risk of cancer. Thank you again.
