Hi, im new here, today we got told that the lump my partner had removed was cancerous…

i hope its ok i post here even if im not the one with it, the op was on the 7th, where a growth was removed from the perineal area, still healing  atm as had some infection and a bed sore ontop of the wound.

i had been thinking the worse for months but she had been denying it all along, so for her it was a big shock, and of course for me its still shocking when someone tells u its cancerous..

its been a wierd day and im not sure how we should feel or what we should do, she has to go for a petct scan and ultra sound of groin to see if its gone to more lymph nodes, i think he said he removed one in the op, but not sure, we wasnt really listening after he said “cancerous “ it was all a bit of a blur tbh

now we have to wait for scans in next few weeks n see what happens but im so scared she will need a operation to remove the nodes and im not sure how we deal with all of that, struggling to deal with just todays news, n im worried she isnt gonna deal with it

  • Hi Cleo23,

I am very sorry to hear of your partners diagnosis.

I think it’s very common to miss information at appointments. The shock and panic can lead to us ‘switching off’. Does your partner have a specialist nurse? I always found mine to be really helpful and I would contact her after appointments to ask any questions I had and clarify anything I wasn’t sure of.

The waiting can be so tough. I’ll be keeping everything crossed that all appointments and results come through quickly and of course that the results are as positive as possible.

I think it’s important to remember there isn’t a right way to feel, cope or deal with things. It’s a personal process and it sounds as though you are very supportive for your partner. Do you have someone to talk to yourself? If not then please do feel free to give one of our lovely advisors a call on the number below. They are there to offer emotional support to people with cancer and their loved ones.

Always here if you want someone to talk to or if you have any questions.

    Take care,

  • Hey, we got a card with a few of the nurses names on and the one who gave us the booklet said we can call anytime and they will call us back when they get the message.

  • Hi  ,

It could be worth making some notes about the things you may want to know and then giving them a call. I’m not sure if it’s the same for all hospitals, but if there’s anything my nurse can’t answer she will usually talk to my consultant and come back to me.
