hi I've just been diagnosed with vin 11 and 111 on the opening to my vigina and perineum my gynecologist didn't want to do anything at first but now wants to do a wide local excision when I signed the consent form I was alarmed to see the risks blood transfusion and colonagist to be aware when I'm having the surgery I'm now petrified and also have never had general anaesthetic before I have a phobia about going to sleep due to nocturnal panic attacks so being made to go to sleep is really scaring me can anyone put my mind at rest on anything I've mentioned

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

Feeling scared about the upcoming surgery is natural, especially if you haven't had surgery before.

I had a wide local excision (WLE) and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for melanoma almost exactly 3 years ago and, like you, had never had surgery or a general anaesthetic (GA) before.

My surgeon listed all the things on the consent form that could happen and I agree, it's pretty scary! However, it doesn't mean these things will happen, and for me they didn't, but they do have to make you aware.

I'd also never had a GA before and was scared about the procedure especially having a canula inserted as I'm a bit squeamish where veins are concerned! On the day of the surgery the surgeon and anaesthetist came to speak to me before I went down to theatre. I explained my worries about the GA and the anaesthetist was very reassuring and told me that my fears were completely normal.

When I went down to theatre the anaesthetist was very good and I hardly felt the canula going in. I remember one minute thinking "this anaesthetic isn't working" and the next minute I woke up in the recovery room! It didn't even feel like drifting off to sleep. One minute I was awake and then the next minute I was waking up.

I hope this reassures you and please feel free to ask me any questions

  • thankyou for answering my questions you have made me feel better I think I'm just beginning to take everything in as last year my gynecologist wanted to just keep an eye on my vin as apparently I have a small perineum but as its somewhere else he wants to try and get rid of it. I came across this site by researching everything on the internet scaring my self and it's so nice to talk to people and there experiences as family and friends are good but not experienced the same thing.

  • I'm glad you're felling better about the upcoming operation .

I can't help with any experiences with VIN but if you type 'VIN' into the search bar in this group you'll find plenty of posts which mention it. You could have a read of those and contact any of the more recent ones where you think the poster might be able to help you further.

As you've discovered it's better to stay off the internet and, if you want to research VIN further, stay with reputable sites like this one. Treatments are improving all the time but things you read on google can be quite dated.

Wishing you all the best with the op
