Chemo radiotherapy

Hi there, I am post surgery and starting chemo radiotherapy on Monday. Any tips that you found useful? I have lichen sclerosis so already sore! Has anyone used mushroom tinctures? My daughter is keen fore to try them for nausea.

  • Hi  and welcome to the group.

It’s difficult to know how any side effects might impact on you in advance as everyone reacts differently. Try not to assume what might happen-some people get through with no side effects, and others may have some issues.

How many sessions of radiotherapy are you having, and what chemo? I wasn’t ever sick or even nauseous on chemo but I was very tired during radiotherapy. You will be given anti sickness medication to take away with you, and I I also had this during the IV chemo. Just speak up and let your doctor know if you need any help.

It will be important also that you tell your doctor if you intend taking any kind of other medication like the mushroom tinctures you have mentioned. Some natural remedies might affect you when you’re having chemotherapy so just run this by the doctor before taking anything to make sure that they wouldn’t be an issue for you and that they are safe to take during treatment.

I found all the staff dealing with me to be very helpful, with lotions and pills to help get me through treatment, so I hope you’ll find the same.

  • I've got 5 weeks of radiotherapy with a Monday session of Cisplatin.

  • Ok-exactly the same plan as I had. The worst thing for me was the tiredness, although after 3 weeks of radiotherapy I had very bad diarrhoea and cystitis. I was given loperaminde for the diarrhoea  and creams for the cystitis, although I wasn’t allowed to have any cream on during the actual radiotherapy sessions. My side effects subsided very quickly after treatment ended which was a relief! Are you using anything for the lichen sclerosis currently?

  • Yes, Estriol pessaries and Elocon cream

  • You’ll probably have this in your medical record but it won’t hurt to ask your doctor about using these while you’re undergoing treatment.

  • Thanks. Good to hear from someone else in the same situation. Today someone asked me where my cancer was. When I told her she said f***ING hell. I didn't know you could get it there!!!!

  • As you might imagine, I don’t tend to tell people I’ve had my vagina removed-not the sort of thing you can bring up in conversation!

Although I’m happy to share things in an anonymous community like this, I don’t tell people in “real life”-I’m not sure they would really be able to understand.
