Worried about Lump!

Hey guys,

I have a big lump inside my vagina, I'm having a lot of back and womb pain. My left leg is also swollen. The lump itself is rock hard at the bottom and covered by what feels like a water balloon. I've had a Bartolin's cyst before but this feels nothing like it! I've just gone through the menopause and I haven't had any bleeding, just awful bloating, running to the loo and th awful pain! I've  realised I've had this lump for years, I never paid it much notice as I thought it was part off my anatomy it was so hard! I had been having pain after sex and feeling sick but I ve so many other ailments it didn't register (I had a 3cm benign lump removed from my thyroid in Nov). I've booked with my gp for next week but I'm really worried...hoping it will be a cyst or maybe prolapse. Apologies for asking but what did everyone's lump feel like? This feels weird, there's at least 2cm thickness of rock hardness running the whole length of my vaginal wall, then the whole thing is enclosed in a massive watery balloon.

  • Yes, definitely needs sorting! People assume that cancer spreads very fast, but that’s not always the case. I had symptoms probably for a year or more before I even went to the doctor. Could have been so much easier for me if I’d gone when they first started but I wasn’t even registered with a gp as I’d never needed one! I didn’t realise I had a pretty large tumour on my cervix, visible to the naked eye. My pain was not anything constant over that year, nor was my bleeding, but I still had locally advanced cancer so it’s really impossible for us to know what’s going on.

I know from my recent issues how painful an infected cyst can be, definitely, but the pain was confined to the area of the cyst itself specifically and didn’t spread beyond the 10cm area it covered. It was very tight and very tender.

I really hope you get some progress tomorrow and you sound like you’re up for standing your ground!

  • Wow you weren't even registered with a doctor?! All this must really have been a shock for you! How is the healing going? I'm exhausted and more than a little frightened that there isn't going to be an end in sight to this pain, anytime soon. I dread getting up in the mornings but have a bit off a routine going and focus on distracting myself which actually seems to help. I can't get comfortable. But hey ho will see what tomorrow brings!!.x

  • Nope-I moved here in 2012 and only registered with a gp in 2018 to see about my symptoms. I’d hardly ever been to a doctor in my life before that and now I seem to be always at hospitals! Stupid, but no point in looking backwards when I can’t change anything.

Should have had an appointment yesterday for a check up but that was cancelled. I thought everything was going fine, but unfortunately still having issues. I will call next week and make another appointment-they have me on an open appointment for 4weeks which means if I phone the clinic direct I will be seen within a couple of days.

Really hope your appointment today will mean that you are properly investigated and something is done. Good luck, and let me know how you get on.

  • That's good that you should get seen a bit quicker this time around! Sucks it was cancelled and it's still playing up! Well the doc is going to hurry up the Gynae appointment so yay at that!! She mentioned a urethral diverticulum and if this is what it is and it's not cancerous that is ok...small op ahead probably and likely bladder problems but don't think it will kill me. If it is cancerous I'm screwed,it's rare and the prognosis is poor. I am praying the appointment comes quickly! She gave me hrt cream for down below? Something for pain and to help me sleep, thank god! Antibiotic for my throat she's a bit concerned about one off my tonsils (great) so I've to go back in a few weeks! Oh the joy! But I have realised that I can't keep this level of worry up, I need to think positive, nobody has said cancer! xx

  • Oh  what a lot to get your head round! Really hope you get your referral through quickly and that it’s not serious.

Worry is hard to control, I know, but just try to remember that you can only deal with what you know for now, which at this point isn’t a whole lot. Hopefully the doctor can chase up so you don’t have much longer to wait. Very glad you’ve got something for the pain and to help you sleep-that’s good. At least there is progress!

  • Yes that is the positive, I think she's expecting me to be seen within 2-4 wks reading between the lines but who knows! I'm a bit sad as I was hoping it would be a cyst that could be drained. Feeling a bit unwell, very hard to get up and do stuff! Anyhow let me know how you're getting on and I'll update you if something new happens!! xx

  • 2-4 weeks is still a long time considering how how long you’ve been symptomatic, but this is the way things are nowadays. It’s all about waiting which is why you have to keep pushing. The pills are an interim measure, not a solution. Ultimately, a gp cannot diagnose you properly because that needs to be done by a specialist. To be honest I’m surprised you’re not seeing a urologist.

Maybe that will be the next step after gynae as this might be something that’s not gynae related. But it’s all wasting time. I’ve learned so much in the 5 years since I was first diagnosed with cancer and one of the things is that you are important and you need to push and advocate for yourself. Don’t accept things without question. If you don’t hear within 2 weeks, push it. Otherwise nothing will happen with any sense of urgency.

I need to keep pushing myself as I’m not completely sorted out. But I’ll phone and make an appointment to be seen next week. I thought my abscess was fine and done with, but it’s not-I’m sore and it’s really tender so I need something done. Keep pushing for yourself.

  • Oh no I was hoping you were on the mend, bloody thing!! I hear you, I should have been seen weeks ago!! I'm really worried I have to say, esp as I've the pain down along the groin. Yes it could be nothing but what if it isn't and it's now spread to the lymph nodes! And that hrt cream I was given, I'm not a big fan off putting anything up there until I know what it actually is! Not feeling great just punctured all the time. Reading up on what the op might involve if it is one, think will have 2 catheters for a bit, one through abdomen, is it a catheter that you have? I've had them before, hate the damn things!! xx

  • No  i don’t have a catheter because my bladder was removed, so there would be nowhere to put one! I have a urostomy formed from my small bowel, where part of the bowel is brought through a hole created in the abdomen and the urinary system is diverted to collect urine in a bag outside the body. So that sits on one side of my belly button.

My rectum was also removed, so I have a colostomy on the other side of my belly button to collect poo in another bag. My stomas are permanent, so that can never change but sounds like your catheters, if you have this op, would be a temporary thing. I can understand your reluctance to use the HRT cream when you don’t know what’s going on in there. Why was it prescribed in this form?

  • Oh goodness...if you don't mind me asking, was it hard to get used to the stomas etc? How is infection prevented and does clothing affect them? I'm guessing looser items? My mum had Lupus, then her gallbladder burst and they found her appendix (cancerous)had stuck to her bowel, so she had a stoma made. Unfortunately she passed away from complications the day she was due to come home from the hospital! I remember her being devastated that she had to have one but we were upbeat after all it was helping to save her life! My daughter is having terrible bowel problems and I think an operation is on the card's, think such problems must run in the family! It is so helpful chatting to you, I'm not nearly as terrified about ops and catheters etc you've shown me life can go on so to speak! How is that abscess, any appointment 's? Awful pain today, finding things so hard! Doc said the cream would help to strengthen the vagina walls but I'm going to wait until I get checked out, or will ask her about it at the next appointment! This waiting sucks!! xx
