Worried about Lump!

Hey guys,

I have a big lump inside my vagina, I'm having a lot of back and womb pain. My left leg is also swollen. The lump itself is rock hard at the bottom and covered by what feels like a water balloon. I've had a Bartolin's cyst before but this feels nothing like it! I've just gone through the menopause and I haven't had any bleeding, just awful bloating, running to the loo and th awful pain! I've  realised I've had this lump for years, I never paid it much notice as I thought it was part off my anatomy it was so hard! I had been having pain after sex and feeling sick but I ve so many other ailments it didn't register (I had a 3cm benign lump removed from my thyroid in Nov). I've booked with my gp for next week but I'm really worried...hoping it will be a cyst or maybe prolapse. Apologies for asking but what did everyone's lump feel like? This feels weird, there's at least 2cm thickness of rock hardness running the whole length of my vaginal wall, then the whole thing is enclosed in a massive watery balloon.

  • Awww thanks I needed that hug! Well I've emailed a private Gynaecolgist/Urologist again for an appointment price and I'm going to try again to see if I can go. It's such bad timing finance wise for us but I really can't deal with this a second more! At least if this person can take a look they can say it's fine to wait or no it needs seen too. Then I'll be able to relax a bit I think as I will feel I've done everything I possibly can! Still getting pain down in at my groin and there's like a soft painful swelling under my butt lol it could be just 'flub rub' but strange it's all on the side off the lump! Anyhow I'm going to drive myself mad! What about yourself? Apart from your last Op and abcess are things going ok?! xx

  • Hi

I’m glad you’ve made contact at least to check on a price-there never seems to be a good time for these unexpected expenses, but I think it will be really useful for you to get a second opinion. If they thinks it’s nothing, you’ll have your mind put at rest, but if they think it’s something, you can get investigated further.

I’m doing fine thanks-it’s been a very busy weekend sorting stuff in the house so I’m pretty weary today! Currently sat with feet up and a cat on my knee!

Hope you’ll hear back soon and can make some progress. You must be just exhausted with it all.

  • House sorting is never ending lol! I made the mistake off offering to paint for my MIL she lives in a flat/house complex for older ppl and looks like I'm getting the whole place to do! Let's just say I've roped in helpers!! Well good news for a change, they've put in a new booking system over here throughout the medical services, which would have put my appointment even further back. So I'm going to take out insurance, I have to wait 6mths before I can ask for treatment but it will be much quicker and it's in a local private hospital which I've been to before for my foot. The final crunch really is the lump on my tonsil it's growing and the doc seemed a bit freaked out about it (can't make this crap up!) Hopefully everything will be fine. The pelvic pain has eased and moved more central like period or tummy pain, groin still feels weird! But I'm feeling positive! My daughter is just home from Budapest, she visited a cat cafe!! Looked brilliant!! Cat snuggles are the best!! Hope you continue to feel well!! I'm reading up a bit on the type off operations etc I might need and I might pick your brains on some of the options, hopefully it won't come to that but if like to be prepared! And I know nothing about types of catheters/pouches, etc! Thanks again for all your help!! xx

  • Hi

Only thing I’d advise is to make very sure you’re confident in the insurance you take out. Although when you say “over here” maybe you’re not in the UK? Reason I say this is that my ex hubby took out insurance but when he went to see about gastric issues, it was refused as he had in the past seen an nhs doctor about this so it was considered a pre existing condition and they wouldn’t see him for it. Maybe it’s different wherever you are. You say you’re “going to” so I presume you haven’t taken it out yet? You don’t want to take it out and in 6 months time find it won’t fund anything.

When I was talking about going private, I was thinking of it in terms of approaching a private hospital and paying for investigations and treatment, rather than taking out insurance when you already unwell. I can’t even imagine waiting for another 6 months before you can possibly actually have this investigated. I simply wouldn’t/couldn’t do it in case it were cancer. I would never take the risk of waiting like you have had to. Is there a strong reason behind you being prepared to wait for so long when you’re in pain and have been for such a long time?

I’m not sure it’s helpful to look at types of operations when you don’t know what’s wrong with you or whether surgery is an option as it’s not really going to tell you anything much but if you feel it’s helpful for you then by all means ask questions. What I know for fact is however limited to the experiences of my own surgeries so I wouldn’t be able to answer anything that I didn’t know about first hand. I know nothing about catheters for example as I’ve only ever had one for a couple of days at a time. So I might not be much help and I wouldn’t speculate on what may or may not be wrong or what may or not be the solution, especially when it comes to surgery.

I’m astonished that you’re going to be painting you mil’s flat-that sounds like a big job when you’re in pain. I’d be getting someone in to do it, because I know I certainly couldn’t have managed it at any time when I was actually ill.

My daughters go to cat and dog cafes frequently so I had a photo from my daughter in a cat cafe when she was on honeymoon in Japan! I’ve not had the fun of going to one yet!

  • I think I'm losing the plot...woke up with at least 6 new moles on my left arm..And I've taken a period, I'm supposed to be in the Menopause it's the first I've had in over a year! Googled the moles can appear due to hormones and immune system which makes sense! Yes the MIL thought she's killed me when I started, so my wife and daughter do it while I direct!! Lol! (It was my wife's idea, she just doesn't understand how ill I'm feeling!). Yes that's why I'm taking a bit off time to read all through the insurance, they take pre existing conditions but you have to wait 6mths before getting  treatment and I'd need to do a combination with the NHS so I'll have to be careful! I'd love to go private, I really would but we have zero money since I've had to leave work. Selling the house is just not an option and we're in debt up to our eyeballs already! I don't think I'm coping which is why I'm not going crazy pushing it, I don't think I want to know! I'm in N Ireland the health service is better than down South but not as good as yours I fear! Looking at different outcomes helps settle me!! And you're a great help with whatever you can tell me!!

  • I’m glad your insurance would look at pre existing conditions. At least that’s something, but still an incredibly long wait when you’re ill. I know you don’t want to push anything, but bleeding and new moles at your age really should be investigated. I’m guessing you don’t want to go back to the doctor? It’s actually always the advice of the nurses on here for new or worsening symptoms. I personally wouldn’t rely on Google to give me advice on the potential cause of something as it cannot diagnose you.

I understand not wanting to know-I was like that, burying my head in the sand. I only made life much more difficult for myself in the end and likely went through far more than I might have had to if I had gone sooner. And not wanting to know doesn’t make any of it go  away.

Could you see a different doctor in your practice if you don’t want to see your own one, just to have another opinion and see if you can get a gynae referral pushed? I’m really out of ideas on what you can do at this point.

I am glad you are now supervising rather than doing the painting, but I do find it sad that your wife doesn’t understand how ill you feel. It’s hard not to have that extra support and understanding.

  • I've just got to bite the bullet and go back to the doctor! Having a period after a year isn't right! It'll probably take a fortnight to get one but hey ho I'll get on to it! Will let you know how it goes! x

  • A fortnight is better than months! My surgery runs a clinic for post menopausal bleeding, so I was seen the day after I called for an appointment-they take it very seriously, and I was referred immediately. Good luck!

  • Both my wife and myself are  trying to get through, feeling really unwell! Read that I should be seen by a specialist within 2wks! Will keep pushing! Feels like a heavy period, that was the one thing reassuring me, that I wasn't bleeding! Maybe I was only perimenopausal, all I need to have periods back! The doc was concerned I had thickening off the womb but the bladder ultrasound showed it was ok.

  • Hi

If a doctor suspects there might be cancer, then the guidelines in the UK are a referral on the 2 week pathway to see a specialist. Things often take longer nowadays but months is unacceptable, and bleeding after not having a period for a year is definitely not right-periods don’t just suddenly return. This on its own should be an urgent referral, quite apart from your other issues.

Please get an appointment to go back to the doctor. If there is no urgent referral made, I’d make a complaint through the practice manager and want a full explanation for why it isn’t happening. I’d escalate this to the relevant trust if you aren’t satisfied. I wouldn’t rely on a bladder ultrasound saying your womb lining is ok.

This is your body, your health and it’s too important not to push for answers in my opinion. You’ve been more than patient waiting so far with no answers!
