Hi, Ive had breast lumpectomy for cancer, completed radiotherapy and on Tamoxifen for 5 years. So no vaginal cancer but at witts end.

Ive been suffering a while with dry and often split labia which heals with sudocrem and recently used a low dose OTC steroid vaseline which can help too. Ive got oestrogen cream, pessaries which used to help but less so now.

I just wondrred if any of you had any advise. Its just so dry, itchy beyond itchiness and looks so red. I will try and get another GP appt too but meanwhile I hope you dont mind me posting on here.

Many thanks Blush

  • Hi  and welcome to the group

It must be driving you crazy having this itchiness, but the best thing to do is get an appointment with your gp, and explain your concerns. If the gp thinks there is any cause for concern, you can be referred to a gynaecologist for further investigation. Itchiness CAN be a symptom of vaginal cancer, but on your labia that would be highly unlikely, and vaginal cancer is a rare cancer, much more likely characterised by bleeding as a prominent symptom.

It’s absolutely fine to post here in the group with your concerns, and please keep us posted with how you get on after you see the doctor. I think after having a previous diagnosis of cancer we are hyper aware of anything else going on in our bodies, but try not to rush to a conclusion of cancer again. There could be other reasons for this itchiness, and hopefully much less concerning than cancer, especially given the location of your itch. You haven’t said how old you are, but the dryness could be connected to age, where this can naturally occur. Let us know how you get on, and I hope you can be reassured that this is nothing serious.

  • Thank you SarahH21

Im 50 and perimenipausal for a long time now with regards to the dryness and have been using the pessaries etc although admittedly not as regular as should be as I find more relief from topical creams etc.

Ive just found that sonce starting Tamoxifen,  the dryness, discomfort seems so much worse.

I did an e consult this a.m as it kept e awake last night and have appt with the Practice Nurse. I guess she'll just refer me to GP.

    Thank u so much.

    Look after yourself Blush

  • Hi again

I’m aware that vaginal dryness can be a side effect of tamoxifen, so it may be that there are some topical products which you could use that you maybe haven’t tried before and your surgery can prescribe. I see you are a member of the breast group, so it might also be worthwhile popping your question on there too and see if you can connect with anyone in the same position who has been on Tamoxifen.

I’m sure there must be a solution, so don’t be fobbed off by being told you just have to put up with it! It’s affecting your life, waking you up and driving you crazy so hopefully you can get some answers. Hope to hear back from you with some positive news soon!

  • Update

Well I saw the Advanced Nurse Practitioner and she had a chat with GP.

So Ive got Aqueous to wash with and Betnovate 1-2 x day and to use the oestrogen pessaries every night. I just had a thought that it could actually be eczema or dermatitis. So im hoping all this will calm everything down. Its so red, inflammed and goddam itchy but trying to be good and leaving well alone.

    Thank you again..

  • That sounds good news for you, but it must be driving you mad! At least they didn’t think it was anything sinister which is the main thing. Really hope the creams and the pessaries will calm everything down.

Thanks for updating your post-so many people don’t come back to say how things have gone and you never know how they are!
