"Strange dry scarred patches on posterior vagina wall"

Hello,

I hope it's OK posting here. I don't even have a diagnosis yet, but I keep finding it difficult to do anything other than worry about my biopsy results - due in 3 to 5 weeks time.

I had a gynae checkup due to a strange smear result and some post-menopause spotting. The gynaecologist saw "two strange dry areas". I had a colposcopy and two biopsies were taken. I asked what it could be and they said they were looking for cancer.

Does anyone know what early stage vaginal cancer looks like?

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

Waiting for biopsy results is an extremely stressful time and it's no wonder that you're worrying having been told that by your gynaecologist that they are looking for cancer.

I can't help you with what vaginal cancer looks like as I did not have that type of cancer. However, I noticed that your post had gone unanswered.

If you don't get any replies you could post your question in ask a nurse and one of the specialist nurses will try to respond within 2 working days. However, with the weekend about to start that means you might not get a reply until Tuesday. If you feel that you want some information before then give the Macmillan Support Line a call on 0808 808 0000. It's free to call and available between 8am and 8pm daily.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Allthecolours,

Its basically skin cancer, so it starts as cells then it grow, its a tumor and firberous, in my case it grew within the lining of my vagina going towards to the bowl, Im really sorry this is a bit late in the day, I've not been on for a while.

I do hope that they didn't find anything sinister, but if they did there is treatment, keep positive.

  • Thanks so much, Shelley!

My biopsies were over 9 weeks ago and I was told to expect the result by post within 4 to 6 weeks, so I've just phoned the GP surgery and asked them to chase it up.

I've been scouring the web for photos of vaginal cancer to see if it looked anything like the way the gynaecologist had described my two patches, but couldn't find anything. I thought if it was a tumour that it would like a tumour, if you see what I mean: more a raised area, not a "dry, scarred area".

Anyway, you've prompted me to get the result chased up, so, as I said, thank you, and for your good wishes, too.

I hope you're all healed up and fine now.

    xx

  • OMG, you've had to wait that long!  Such a difference going private, had biopsies taken 28th September, I was being sat down by an oncologist on the 6th of October last year

Get back on that phone and demand your results!

I only went private because Id been fobbed off that long and was so fed-up by the time I'd begged for a referral the gateway place you phone told me it could have been months before I got to see a gynaecologist and I just knew (had done for months) that something was wrong.

Oh my undercarriage is still a bit tender, it went through the mill and ive not had the all clear yet..but Im cracking on with life and back at work.

If you don't mind me asking, how old are you?

  • My GP's very good. She out a rocket up them last time because they'd messed up my appointment and written that I needed a colposcopy, but made me an appointment for something else. Sigh... Anyway, yes, I told my GP and she had me in for the colposcopy the following day.

I'm keen to get the result now. Have looked up early stage skin cancer and seen pictures that I would describe exactly as a "strange, dry scarred area".

If you knew something was wrong, you must have had symptoms, though. Would you be OK to tell me what they were?

  • I was bleeding after sex which could also be quite painful at times, then I had countless urinary infections and discharge...we ladies should share everything.

I actually took the decision to put a post on facebook on mothers day about what had happened to me and my symptoms, up to that point only close family and friends knew, I just thought, there's no awareness around vaginal cancer, but lots of press about cervical and breast..I just wanted to make women aware that this is a cancer women get.

  • Yes! We should share everything!

(I don't have bleeding after sex, but I've had interstitial cystitis for ages and ages, and discharge which they told me is thrush.)

Good for you putting info on Facebook.

And once again, thanks so much for your time and trouble "talking" to me now. Knowledge is power!

  • Sorry, you asked my age and I forgot to say: I’m 56.

  • Please let me know how you go on, if it does mean treatment, I'll be happy to give you tips on how best to cope and minimise the pain and side affects that comes with it.  Fore warned if fore armed!
