hi, my Ma has been diagnosed with stage 3 vaginal cancer. She is 85 and has bathroom issues a lot. She has read that radiotherapy will make her propose and frequency worse. She is now thinking of not putting her self through radio. She had been house bound for a while and the energy added to get to hospital. Any advice for her. Has radiotherapy significantly helped anyone. Thank youn

  • Hi and welcome to the online community although I'm sorry that you've had to find us.

I'm sorry that nobody has been able to help you with their experiences of radiotherapy for vaginal cancer. Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to help with a first hand experience either as I didn't have this type of cancer.

However, you could post your question in ask about radiotherapy and radiographer Kate will aim to respond within a couple of working days.

I've had a look on the Macmillan website for you and found this information about treating vaginal cancer with radiotherapy. It also talks about the possible side effects that your Ma might experience.

Thank you. Ma is now deciding whether to have radiotherapy. She is between a rock and a hard place atm due to other things and being unable to leave the vicinity of her loo.

I have had radiotherapy and brachytherapy after surgery. I am 59. It is tiring going everyday but doable. Has she got anyone to cook for her? Best wishes Brenda

  • Hi I was diagnosed with vaginal cancer in 2014. I had surgery, followed by radiotherapy and then brachytherapy.

Yes it did affect my bowels afterwards. For the first few weeks I couldn't leave the house because when I got the urge to go to the toilet I had to go there and then. It did get easier but at first I would only go out if I know there would be a toilet.

I would always have an emergency pack with me  - spare pants, wet wipes and plastic bag.

Took me about a year to get back to normal but even now I sometimes have to run.

I still have the occasional moments but just take immodiom which really helps.

Wishing your mum all the best.
