Back ache?

Hi All, I’m half way through my chemo and have just started EC.  I’m struggling to know if some things are symptoms of the new drug or if I have flu cold ect.
I’ve read immunotherapy can mimic flu like symptoms too which I’m also taking.  I have slightly swollen glands in my throat which hurt when I swollow and my back between my ribs hurts.  I have no temperature though I have been checking.
Hs anyone else has these symptoms and been ok?  Are they common side affects for these drugs or is this more worrying?
thanks

 J

  • Hi JollyJC

It can be hard when you are having a new treatment to know what are normal and expected side effects and what may be something that is more concerning.

My advice is to contact your CNS/hospital- I expect you will have been given a 24 hour cancer line number. It may be on a sepsis card that you were given- mine was.

With chemotherapy treatment any potential signs of infection- with or without a temperature need to be reported as there is a risk that any infection could develop quickly and potentially lead to sepsis.

So it may well be that some of the symptoms could be down to side effects however if there is a chance of there being an infection brewing, then this needs to be ruled out.

This happened to me and I called the helpline and was sent to hospital. Once in hospital I was kept in for 1 night had everything checked and given intravenous antibiotics within an hour of phoning.

I hope you are feeling better soon

  • Hi so an update.  The back ache got worse and then unbearable.  Stabbing pains in my spine like everytime with my pulse rate.  Eventually I worked out that it was the injection I had to boost the white blood cells.  It was scary and wish they had warned me of that side affect.  So if anyone gets this try not to worry it does pass.
