Feeling low

Hi everyone.
I just need to come on here and ask if the way I’m feeling is normal.

I had a lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node removed on Friday 22 jan so it’s only 9 days ago.
I was really upbeat and positive when I had my diagnosis. Seemed to sail through 5 biopsy’s, even though I bruised really badly.
Ive had a couple of up days since the op but more down.
I’m still so sore. Especially under my arm at the top. It feels red raw but doesn’t look it. I actually feel like I’ve stood against a wall and let someone beat me on my boob armpit and ribs with a baseball bat! I look about 100 (I turned 50 last October) but today I’ve been so tearful. keep thinking I must be a right wuss to be feeling like this still. I’m worrying about how long I’m going to be off work (I’m a personal shopper at Tesco.com) Does anyone else feel the same? Feel like I’m being a drama queen!

sending hugs to everyone

  • Hi Samarah, you are absolutely not being a drama queen.  You've had major surgery so you are bound to be sore.  I have had similar to you - a lumpectomy and 4 lymph nodes removed.  My surgery was 16th Jan.  I was given nerve blockers to start before the surgery so those have helped take away most of the pain.  The underarm pain and numbness is still there but manageable because of the nerve blockers.

What have you been given for the pain because maybe you need something stronger.  I would talk to your surgeon or BCN about the pain and see if you can get a prescription for stronger pain meds.

Pain is exhausting and depressing so the way you are feeling is completely normal.  But don't suffer in silence seek help for the pain from your doctors.  Once you get the pain under control you will start looking 50 again.

Hope you get the help you need.

    xx

  • Thank you for messaging Godwilling,

I think I just needed to hear that from someone in the know!
You are just under a week ahead of me then!
I didn’t have nerve blockers. I’m only taking paracetamol for the pain. But it doesn’t seem to touch it. Mind you when you think what we’ve had stuck in us over the past few weeks we would be in pain.
Did you have a guide wire put in as well?
I think I’ll ring the BCN tomorrow and see what they say. I have a phone consultation with the consultant on Thursday to get the results from the surgery so I can get advice from him too.
I just thought I’d bounce back quickly after the op but obviously not.

good luck with your next steps! Stay safe and thanks once again for the advice

  • Hi Sam,

Not surprised you're in pain if you are only taking paracetamol.  If you have ibuprofen try adding that in too so that you alternate between paracetamol and ibuprofen - it means you can take something every 4 hours if I remember correctly.

And definitely speak to BCN and your consultant about something stronger.

  • Thank you for the advice Maria. I’ll give it a go and call them tomorrow
