Is double Mastectomy an option

I had 3 tumours in my left breast and had a Mastectomy with 4 lymph nodes removed 5 weeks ago. My lymph nodes were clear, however, I am about to commence Chemotherapy. If triple negative is so aggressive should I be offered the chance to have a Mastectomy on the right side? I have been told that this would not be offered on the NHS as they cannot operate on healthy tissue. I am so worried about it returning-should I ask again?

  • I was able to have a double mastectomy but I think that is because I am also a BRACA2 carrier.

Have you talked with any of the breast cancer charities who might give you more reasons for a no answer. I am thinking of MacMillan, Breast cancer Now and Future Dreams.

I can appreciate why you are worried and again they can offer support around this as well.

    All the best

  • Hey, I asked for double mastectomy and was told no cos I didn’t have the BRCA gene.
I had chemo first then surgery, then radio and now chemo tablets. They do all they can to try and stop reoccurrence but I guess it’s something they can’t control xx

  • Thank you for your reply

  • I’ve had BC twice before but this is my first time at triple negative. I asked about bilateral and was told if it wasn’t in the left breast they wouldn’t remove it. I could insist. If I did insist I would have to go for psychological assessment. Then they would decide. Personally I think if I didn’t insist I need psychological assessment. How could I possibly leave myself open to going through this for a forth time. If it is genetic the situation would be looked at differently. Have you had the genetic test? Remember you have the right to a second opinion!

Three times! What did I do?

  • I had a lumpectomy a month ago but had asked whether a mastectomy would be better and prevent my TNBC from coming back. The surgeon said if it did come back it would potentially be more difficult to treat as there would be no breast tissue left to remove.
