Dexamethasone and no sleep

Hi

I started my first chemo session yesterday, and had Dexamethasone and piriton pre my AC infusions. Had the dex at ~3pm.  Thankfully no reactions or issues other than a sore hand and cold head (thank you cold cap!).  Have found I am wide awake all night! Can’t get to sleep at all! Now worried I have to take more Dex this morning
is this normal?? I know not to take it after 2ish, so this isn’t an issue. I’ve never been unwell prior to TNBC, so idea if this normal and if I should speak with the hospital about not taking more of it.  I have domperidone and ondansetron too.

  • Hello Pipsqueak80,

I have Dexamethasone as part of my chemo. I'm having Decotaxel (T) as part of my FEC-T. I take 8 the day before, 8 on the day of chemo and 8 the following day. The first night I never sleep very well even though I've taken them morning and lunchtime - tend to just cat nap. The day of my chemo I'm just groggy but that could be the chemo, and I do sleep. The third day I get a red face and dry skin. Watch out for a mood dip at some point. Sometimes it is big and sometimes it isn't. The sleep does come back!

    Hope this helps, xx

  • Oh, thank you so much! Oddly don’t feel tired, so hoping napping during day will happen.  This would a great thing at Glastonbury! Not ok much post chemo.
T you also for the other tips, will keep an eye out, especially the mood dips.
    Many thanks xx

Hi I have just finished my chemo I was the same as you not being able to sleep due to the steroids Thankfully the sleep returned after day 4/5 and didn’t get any worse during the treatment The first night was always the worst and I left something good to watch on the tv as I knew I wasn’t going to sleep

I also good the mood dips but they are also improving I also think the isolation of the Covid plays a big part . I live on my own and have been locked up since 23rd of March Even the dog is fed up now
    These are strange times

Keep strong and stay safe xx
