The oncologist told me its possible a lumpectomy could not need chemo afterwards - just radiotherapy and bone treatment. The surgeon seemed to assume chemo was necessary.
Has anyone not needed chemo or knows of this please?
Morning
The standard treatment for triple negative is more commonly chemo prior to surgery, or if TN is found in pathology after surgery you would normally be offered chemotherapy post surgery as there are no other follow on treatments for TN apart from radiotherapy.
There is a chance that pathology results from surgery point to minimal risk - cancer cells contained, small tumour, no lymphnode or vascular invasion; the way forward depends very heavily on those results.
TN is classed as aggressive and has a slightly higher chance of coming back as either recurrence or secondary cancer within 5 years.
Of those who don't have chemotherapy for a vast majority it is by choice; opting for quality of life over quantity.
I don't know of any TN ladies here who have not been offered chemo, but that doesn't mean there aren't any - maybe 'bumping' your question will prompt some more replies ?
This is the question you have to mull over and make a decision on based on age, any current health conditions etc.
The thought of chemo can be scary but for most who are in fairly good health manage to get through it get reassurance of eliminating further risk as much as possible.
Hope this is of some help at a tough time - Take care, G n' J
Thankyou. I don't know what 'bumping' my post means- please explain.
i could have chemo first but the oncologist said surgery was the main thing and could find out more as you mention so that I just might not need chemo and just have radiation and bone treatment whatever that is?
I have an apt to see the surgeon again on Tuesday
the cancer hurts - not hugely but I don't want that to get worse.

Hiya
"Bumping" is when a message or question hasn't had a reply for a while - So when someone replies to it automatically goes straight back to the top of the groups activity page so is more visible to members
Yes, surgery is the main treatment as it actually removes the tumour and is termed primary treatment. Everything else that follows on is termed adjuvant and is all about risk reducing. If anyone has chemo or other treatments prior to surgery it is called neoadjuvant... Gotta love med speak eh :-/
Consider yourself 'bumped' Hugs, G n' J
