Hi All

I am wondering if anyone can advise please! My mum got diagnosed with TNBC towards the end of last year. She has had a lumpectomy and has just finished her first cycle of chemo, the second one starts this Saturday. She used the cold cap, and today (day 18) she still has a full head of hair and no sign of any hair loss from the head. It seems a lot of people who were not able to use the cold cap lost their hair around day 15. Her consultant thinks after the 2nd cycle she will probably loose a lot of her hair, just wondering if anyone else has tried the cold cap with TNBC and have had any success?
Many thanks x

    Hi

If your mum is having EC or FEC the time period for hair loss can be between days 12 to 24 after the first session. The cold cap can be less successful with EC or FEC chemotherapy than it is with the taxanes like Docetaxel or Paclitaxel type.

The hair has to be quite wet all over and the cap frozen not baggy when fitted and has to be well fitting (snug with no gaps) all round so it makes contact with all the scalp. Average hair loss with the cold cap can still be around 40% but for some it doesn't work so well and lose more than this. Obviously the cap has to be well fitting  for every session.

Hopefully you will get some more replies from those with experience of using it, if not do join and post this question to the Main Breast Group as it is a lot more active than this group.

If you type cold cap into the groups search bar it should bring up any other discussions that mention it.

    Hope this helps a bit, G n' J

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, that’s really helpful. She is having EC for the first 3 cycles. Thanks again.

    Hi

EC is fairly standard for most types of BC so I refined the 'cold cap' search to cover the main breast group.

You can see those results clicking here.

  • EC is the worst chemo for hair loss,  but a long as thr cap is cold enough (one of thr machines at my hospital isn't) then she should thin,  but keep a decent amount of hair.  I had 4xEC, and then paclitaxel.  If SLR keeps using the cold cap through jet second type (docetaxel/ paclitaxel) her hair will grow through that.  I had a couple of bald patches which filled in,  and have about 1-2" of new hair growth all over,  with a bit of old hair left 4 weeks past my lat chemo. EC will turn hair straw- like,  so your mum should follow thr rules on thr Paxman website (wash only 1-2 tomes weekly,  don't towel dry just dab,  paraben free products,  use a wide comb gently to untangle daily), After EC hair will still fall out for a few weeks, but should slow down, and once chemo is over its strange not to lose hair anymore! Sheer can't blow dry it until after chrmo,  and can't dye it for a few months after either unless herbal (without SSL thr chemicals) as her roots will be fragile for a bit. She'll probably avoid chemo curls,  but may get different coloured hair come in! Mine is currently almost black but become mixed black and white,  with white patches st the front instead of brown with some white hairs (I have brown ends so can't wait to dye it!) Good luck! X
