TNBC and Genetics

At 59 I understand that I am a bit old for TNBC!!!  My consultant has half mentioned genetic testing, although seems to think that its only available if you are under 50.  As I understand it where TNBC occurs in someone older it can be down to a faulty gene, and that makes the whole thing a bit sinister?  But how will they know if its a faulty gene if they dont do the testing? I'm also concerned that if it is a genetic thing that my daughter ought to be finding out a bit more................. and then of course there is my son?

I'd be really interested to hear any thoughts/experience?

  • Hi Kerry

I'm afraid that I can't help with your questions but I spotted that your post hadn't had any replies yet.

You could also post this in the ask a nurse section of the community and one of the specialist nurses will aim to respond within 2 working days.

  • Hello Cloud123,

I'm 62 in December and found out in February that I was TNBC. I have often wondered about this genetic test but it has never been offered. I only have one son and no one else in the family has ever had BC so I presumed that they would not need to do it! Interesting!!!

    Take care xx

I am 71 and found out in March I had tnbc. Mammograms have not shown it due to having 'dense breasts' which was never mentioned to me. Only ultra sound shows it-I felt a painful lump. There has been no mention of hereditary genes. No one else in the family has had it but I told them all to watch out for it and for dense breasts also.I have no children-sadly. I am thinking in future I want ultra sound checks not mammograms.

  • Like you the possibility of faulty gene worries me. I am 75, no other person in family has had cancer never mind TNBC. I have asked about genetic testing but assume that is on back burner thanks to COVID but I still worry about my son and grandchildren.
