Surgery, no chemotherapy

My sister is 29 and has the BRCA1 gene. She has just been diagnosed with stage 1 grade 3 triple negative breast cancer. My mum has had stage 3 grade 3 triple negative twice (and is still here) so I know how brutal this cancer type is!

Due to previous health issues, her doctors do not believe she is strong enough for chemotherapy. She has had heart issues, an ongoing brain injury and nerve damage in her legs from previous illnesses. They are recommending a bilateral mastectomy and node removal and then, essentially, seeing what happens after that. They have spoken about targeted therapies but want to do this a step at a time.

I would love to know if anyone has, or knows anyone who has, been treated successfully for this type of cancer without chemotherapy.

  • I have tnbc and have after discussion with my oncologist refused chemo.
I have personal reasons for refusing but when she gave me the stats it helped a lot.

she said if I had 6 months chemo, lumpectomy then radiotherapy and it worked I had an 87% chance of surviving 10 years.

if I went down my road of lumpectomy ( which I’ve had) radiotherapy which I’m about to start and it works I have a 76% chance of surviving 10 years.

I don’t know if it will work but am staying positive and relieved that I said no to chemo .

  • I think a lot of people just hear cancer and automatically assume chemo. Things have come on a lot since my mum was first diagnosed and I'd rather she have chemo as a last resort if there are other avenues to explore first. I hope your surgery went well x

  • Surgery was fine, no pain, exercises not a problem, haven’t bothered with painkillers since day 2 (today is day 7) decided to do what I felt was best for me. Didn’t wear a bra at night, have been sleeping on my side no problem. More bruising on my hand after cannula than at site of lumpectomy. I have been so lucky so far long may it continue Fingers crossedI just try not to dwell on it next appointment 24/7 where I WILL be told all good and radiotherapy can start. Until then Champagne glassChampagne . I just think no point worrying about things you can’t change live each day. I was tested for gene as my mum dies from ovarian cancer thankfully I’m ok. Hope your sister is ok and Pray she gets through this. X
