Thyroid cancer

I had an inconclusive biopsy a year ago and waited 8 months for an ultrasound which has confirmed cancer. I’m having my thyroid and lymph nodes removed on Monday. I don’t know what type of cancer I’ve got, the stage or what to expect after surgery. Advice very welcome. Thanks

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I hope the surgery goes well tomorrow.

  • I hope your surgery went well.

my advice for what it’s worth is to be kind to yourself. Rest and don’t feel guilty for doing so. Take one day at a time.  Tell people how you are feeling and let them help you

  • Thank you. Surgery went well and now I wait for 3-4 weeks for results PrayHeart

  • Hello lovely,

Welcome to the club BlushBest advice I can give, and would give to my younger self is... Accept that you will be exhausted and that people may not understand why or just how much. And ask questions. Educate yourself. It will help further down the line, GPs are not always as on the ball as you will need them to be - they can't be specialists in everything. Better if you're a specialist of your thing.

Don't worry about keeping up with everything. Concentrate on you, deal with it your way, not how people say you should.

It will probably mean iodine therapy - not terrible, just tiring. IT'S ALL TIRING!

I was where you are 25 years ago. I've been very statistically unlucky to have it again. Statistics will tell you it's easily treatable with an excellent prognosis.

Wishing you the best of luck x

  • Glad to hear it went well. I’m finding the wait for results quite hard. I was told a month.  I’m at the beginning of week three and haven’t had an appointment date yet.
I was hoping to be back at work next week, sadly due to the extreme tiredness and low mood I don’t think it will happen

  • Thanks for acknowledging the tiredness.  I was beginning to think I was having a moment and making it up!!

  • Thank you so much for those kind and wise words!

  • Sorry to hear you’re struggling. Are you waiting for surgery or for results after surgery? I think the waiting can be the hardest part! I’ve been told to chase my appointment if I don’t hear in 2-3 weeks. Hope you hear very soon

  • Waiting for results.

I was told I had cancer so had surgery within the month.  A week after being told I had cancer another consultant rang me one evening to say his colleague might of misinterpreted my results and I might not have cancer after all.
I’d told my family and friends by this point.

Talk about messing with my head.

  • Oh that’s really tough to go through. My first biopsy was inconclusive and it took a while for the medics to agree on a diagnosis. I guess the good news is- if you had cancer it’s gone and if you didn’t you are now not facing years of tests. I also guess you still had a problem with your thyroid which is now sorted? Really hope you get some clear info really soon
