Hi everyone!

Just wanted to say hi and look for emotional support. First diagnosis of cancer was 2017. I had surgery and rai done. Eight years after, it came back. I just had my surgery 5 days ago and unfortunately my voice has been raspy since then. To add insult to injury, I'm spiralling down. This time, cancer is hiting me emotionally and I don't know what to do. I am only 35, no kids yet my life is flashing before me and I don't have support system.

  • Hi,

Same here, sort of. First in 1999, now again, but on my lungs as no thyroid mass remaining. Radiotherapy hasn't worked. Definitely hit harder this time, physically and mentally. Found a research professor with interesting ideas. Not finding much support at the hospital... Are you working through it? I would be better doing that but lost a job opportunity due to this. All I can suggest is look at diet/ supplement options and get some exercise where you can. If it gets too much demand help, you are entitled to medical and mental health support. I feel better when I'm actively in control of it, or at least think I am. Hope you feel stronger soon x

  • Hi Kate, I’m sorry to read this. I think the most important thing is to keep talking about your feelings and join as many support groups as you can. There is one called shine network aimed at adults up until their 40s. They usually host events around the country such as meet ups and to meet people who just get it. Take everything day by day. If voice continues to stay raspy after a while, mention to healthcare professionals so they can do a speech and language therapy referral for you to support with voice. I would say it’s normal for it to be raspy at the minute due to the breathing tube as well as location of surgery xx
