Good morning I'm new to the group. I was diagnosed with a node on my thyriod 3 years ago was told it was due to menapause. Last September I was sent to a specialist clinic in Edinburgh were I was told I have thyriod cancer and a cyst sitting on top of it and burnt vocal cords. They said they could remove it but I could lose my voice permanently. And it could spread . ( my dad died of lung cancer & my grandad died of throat cancer)
They said new studies suggested it was best to leave it until it became an obstruction. I was in shock and left , my family are angry with me because I'm doing nothing because that was the advice I was given the lump is bigger but I don't know if it's the cyst or the lump.
I'm feeling really confused and alone and wondered if anyone else was told the same. They also said the cyst if they drained it I would temporarily loose my voice and it may just go again best left until it's obstruction.
Morning Sunshine1kaz and welcome to the forum, although I’m sorry to read your post. What a dreadful position to be left in. I too was misdiagnosed with menopause for 10 years and it was medullary thyroid cancer! When you are then left with much more complicated prognosis and possible spread, it leaves you feeling very bitter on top of all the other myriad of feelings when being told you have cancer!
When we are sat in front of the consultants being told all of this information, it’s like you are a rabbit in the headlights, the only thing you hear is “cancer.” Not very much else goes in at all, so your family musn’t be angry with you or your decision. You are following what the professional has told you.
If it were me and feeling as confused as you are, I think I would ask for a second opinion. You have every right to that. Don’t feel you’ll “upset” anyone by doing that, this is your body and your health and you’ve already lost faith by the mis-diagnosis. I would want all the options explained to me again clearly and perhaps take someone with you next time so that they can write it all down, as it’s honestly so hard to absorb it all. Perhaps you could ask to see the new studies that your consultant referenced if that would help? Look at the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons website (BAETS) for your second opinion.
Please try to stick to reliable resources for any research you do, google can contain unreliable and outdated information and just plain scare you.
I hope someone with more direct experience of the cyst on the nodule will reply if they can but I must admit I’ve been on here a few years and not seen that come up.
Hope this is of some help anyway. Best wishes x
Medullary Thyroid cancer dx May 2023
Thank you so much for the response. I really appreciate it. I have an appointment with the doctor in 2 weeks as that was the earliest appointment.
It's definitely got bigger but I'm unsure if it's both or just the cyst my voice is really croaky all the time and sore most days and a mild temperature all the time.
I'm going to request to have it looked at again. I was told if I noticed any change I was to go back but I can't remember if I need the doctor to refer me or not .
I'm just feed up feeling ill and questioning myself if I made the wright decision as much as they said it was OK if I changed my mind .
I definitely want to see the studies they were talking about as I can't even remember what the studies was called as I wasn't retaining the information properly at the time. I know they were trying to encourage me to stay and talk more but I just wanted to go home
