Papillary & Follicular Cancer

After scan and biopsy which was found to be suspicious, I went through a Thyroidectomy which was tested and found to be Papillary Cancer but the report also found Follicular architecture with high mitotic count. The nodule which was great than 5cm had been breached in four places and penetrated blood vessels and Lymph nodes. An estimate of my cancer was in the region I had it since 2019.

Treatment was a Radioactive Iodine which would be a larger doze so meaning three days than usual two in Hospital, two days prior to going in receiving injections each day and week prior being iodine free diet.

As far as I can glean from Cancer team, the Follicular is very aggressive so the penetration outwith the nodule and growth in size is a characteristic of this type of cancer. It can return after treatment and was designated DHGTC in 2022 by World Health Organization. I could not find much information but did read the WHO report and a group report on 32 patients results.

Is anyone else had results or went through diagnosis and recovery from this Cancer.

  • Yes, I was told I could take a phone or tablet as long as it had no keyboard separate from internal touch screen. I do use a c-pap I await to see how they get round this. I will be in Monday the 4th for blood to be taken and first jag then in the next day for second jag. They also said I will complete documentation before my entering  the room for treatment on the 6th Nov.

  • Glad you are doing well and better

    wish you quick recovery

  • Just going from meeting to treatment hopefully nearing end of this treatment phase and then observations over next few years

  • I wish you well

i have just been diagnosed myself

I have had total thyroidectomy awaiting histology report

  • The waiting seems the hardest part between treatment, tests and information on results. I started in June and final treatment is 6/7/8 Nov then a full scan. Hope you you well and a quick successful journey

  • Just had feedback after bloods and scans following RAI treatment. It seems I am free from cancer travel only place radiation showed up was in my right hand side of my neck where my nodule was removed. It looks like it is dealing with any residue that was left from surgery. I will need scan and bloods taken in eight weeks and that will only mean yearly observations.

Sometimes everything works out for the best and I feel very fortunate. Looking back my journey started in early June and came to an outcome in November, it has been an experience, I can reflect how fortunate I have been.
