Hello. I am 71 years old and had a Thyroidectomy on September 7th. I am just starting on my Low Iodine Diet as I am booked in on November 16th to have RAI at Maidstone Hospital. The cancer was also found in one lymph node right by the Thyroid gland.

I have read up on RAI and researched it all countless times. Hopefully all will be well.

  • Hello @Bitzy I have a hospital appointment tomorrow to sort out RAI treatment so I probably won't be long behind you, I am 67 years old and had my TT at the end of July, and rh side neck dissection. I seem to have waited a while and thought I would have had the treatment by now, but my operation was at a different hospital to where I was diagnosed and have now been referred back to the original hospital.  I had 60 lymph nodes removed and cancer was found in 14 of them and I also have 2 tiny nodules in my lung.  Best wishes for your treatment and I hope the LID diet goes well too.  Will you be having the Thyrogen injections or are you having to come off your Levothyroxine medication?  I was reading about it yesterday and the risks are higher for over 65 year olds, so I am wondering what I will be doing and feeling slightly anxious about it.

  • Hi. I am having Thyrogen injections. I will let you know how I get on.

  • Hi Petal, try not to worry all we can do is be pro active about our treatment, my consultant prescribed me extra thyroxine for the last few months and now he has withdrawn thyroxine and now he makes me take liothyonine 20 mgs and will get it withdrawn 2wks before my iodine in hospital I think what he's doing is trying to trick my brain to produce the cells and when I get iodine my body will gobble up iodine to kill cancer cells, I think what I said is right. I am on diet 5 wks and I hate missing my cuppa I hate plant milk haha xxxx

  • Apparently I will be having them too I was told yesterday.  When I asked about it being more risky for the over 65s she shook her head and dismissed my worries a little I thought.  So I know I am going to be more anxious but at least it means I won't have to be off Levothyroxine which sounds to cause a few problems and that would be longer than just having the injections on the 2 days prior to the RAI treatment.  I would be interesting in hearing about your own experience.

  • Hi Bitzy

Can you explain what Thyrogen injections are please

  • Hello.

Well, tomorrow I will be 4 weeks post RAI. I had the Thyrogen injections two days before the RAI and I didn't really have any symptoms. All went pretty smoothly.

     I now feel relatively normal.
