Follicular carcinoma

Hi there.

I am new here and thought I'd share my experience. I am 24 and just recently found out that my right thyroid (which was taken out) was follicular carcinoma, though a minimal invasive type. I'm still trying to get my head around what this means. I will be having a completion surgery next month then possible radioactive iodine.

I am quite nervous but I have been dealing with this since December 2020. Basically I had to push to get a biopsy as I felt my ultrasounds weren't quite telling the full story. I am so glad I did and that this was caught early. I am a bit emotional as I've had time of work and now will have to have more off. I'm just hoping my story is helpful to those who aren't quite sure whether to push for a follow-up.

Many thanks

  • Hi . I'm not from this group, I just dropped by and noticed you've not had a reply from the members here as yet. It's good to share your experience and prove that being a little pushy can get results. We know our own bodies and if something doesn't seem right it's best to be persistent rather than sit back and do nothing. As a result your cancer was caught early.

I myself used to be the sit back and do nothing person. I mentioned a slight gynae problem to a friend, which I was going to ignore, she nagged me and it turned out I was harbouring an aggressive hitchhiker. If it hadn't been for her....

It’s always helpful to others if you write a little something (or a lot) about yourself and your journey to date. You can enter it into your profile (click on your username and select “Profile”) It’s helpful to other members with a similar diagnosis who can then hopefully answer your questions. It also means that you don't have to keep writing the same thing over and over. You can amend or update it at any time.

I can understand you feeling a bit emotional at the moment, once you've had your surgery and RI treatment thing's will be calmer

  • Hi there

thank you so much! I will update my profile :)

  • Hi Kaz,Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, I too have been diagnosed and its tough. Working out what to do with work and feeling guilty about time off is inevitable but don't, your health comes first! I was lucky to be able to take time off from work and after my first op and am currently not working and I've had completion and RAI tomorrow.

I too had to push for my diagnosis I knew something wasn't right.

Glad to hear it was caught early as tou know it makes it highly treatable but it doesn't mean the process isn't any thing but life changing. Physically and emotionally.

  • Hi there, sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It certainly is hard and only this week have I really started to feel all the emotions. I've been at my school for first few days and go off on 16th November, to isolate then have my op on the 19th. I just can't wait to be done with it all! How did you find the RAI?

  • Hi KazC, I was diagnosed aged 25 and also had to push for a biopsy! It went on for 10 months for me before a diagnosis. You will go through a lot of emotions, I have been where you were so I felt them all! The RAI was boring but I had no side effects at all.
I am now 29 so a few years post treatment and was given the all clear, just have to have regular blood tests to make sure all my levels are okay.
If you did want to send me a direct message please feel free and I would be more than happy to talk you through my experiences and what to expect.

    Lydia x

  • Thank you for your comment, it’s scary how common it is becoming now! Glad to hear all is well now x i am going to message you!

  • Hi, I am 27 and just had the same diagnosis as yours.. It took me 4 months of telephone appointments to tell my GP there is something growing in my neck ..

I had a TT last friday and I am now awaiting for my RAI treatment. I am currently off work on Maternity leave ( not one I imagined to have ).

I hope all is well, youre not alone. WE've got this girl xx

  • Hi there. Hope you are okay and sorry to hear what you are going through. It’s so hard isn’t it? How are you finding the medication? At times I have been tired and then energetic. I’m picking up my results on monday and hoping to find out when RAI is too.

thank you and wishingn you well xx

  • Did you get any update on your RAI date?

  • Nope not yet, i am due for a blood test next week
