My apologies if this topic has been discussed before in this group...

I wondered if anyone had Critical Illness cover in place when they were diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer and, if so, did the policy pay out?

Many thanks

  • I've never had that type of insurance because I always thought they'd wriggle out of payments to most people. But I thought (and it is only a thought) that you had to be 'terminal' (i.e. critically ill - before they pay out and thankfully that won't be the case for most of us with thyroid cancer.

Employment insurance would be different - if you're too ill to work then I'd guess that would pay out.

    Best wishes

I don't have critical illness insurance but my oncologist said that critical illness should cover thyroid cancer. In fact he brought up the topic and said that his past patients have received payout and if I need him to certify something for the claim, he'd be happy to. It's a shame I didn't have it but I had always thought that I would never need it!

I've got a critical illness policy and it says for cancer they won't pay our for early cancers such as in situ ones, or any that are still within the organs outside layer and are therefore just a collection of cells.  It has to be invasive and they define that as cancer that has become large enough to invade healthy tissue and has begun to form blood vessels.   They specifically mention dcis breast cancer as being excuded and prostate cancer unless it is above a T2N0M0 classification.

I've googled it and the only mention I could find of thyroid cancer being specifically excluded in poicy's was in one of the newer policy's which state that thyroid cancer is except from claims unless larger than 1cm.

When i got my ultrasound the report stated that there was blood flow to the mass and it was over 2cm and graded as a T2 tumour. It was also completly inside the thyroid as well. So it wasn't just a few cells in the lining of my thyroid.   That is why I had to have an additional operation and then the radioiodine ablation done.

So I have decided to claim on my policy. When I phoned they told me that Thyroid cancer is covered but every case is treated individually. They have written to my GP and he has 21 days to give them a report on it.

If you have this policy check the details.

Has anyone else claimed and been successful ?

    Hi, thanks,

How long did it take to process ?

Also was there any restriction as to how long he had to claim ? I was diagnosed 8mths ago but no-were in my policy does it say you have to claim within a set amount of time.   I know from looking on-line that some companies say you have to claim within 6mths of diagnosis but that is written in the policy details but mine doesn't say anything at all.

I didn't give the policy a thought until I saw this thread and then looked it out. My mind the last few months has been like mush due to the surgery's, delays etc.

Just an update to this. My policy paid out last week.  So happy, just went to the bank this morning and paid my mortgage off !

Everyone please look out your insurance policy's and read them. I just assumed that critical illness cover meant you had to be dying for it to pay out early, but you don't.

  • Wow! That's pretty good.

You know thyroid cancer isn't ALL black clouds. There are plenty of silver linings if you know where to look for them.

    Best wishes

Hi there, I just read your biography and my wife's storey is almost identical to yours. She had the second half of her thyroid removed three weeks ago yesterday and is now in the process of waiting the 6 weeks before her further (iodine) treatment.

We too are going through the process of making critical illness claims (like you I guess we assumed that the illness / cancer had to be fatal to claim!), with the insurers awaiting papares to be sent back from specialist.

I was just wondering if you were aware of any thyroid cancer patients NOT being able to claim - I'm always weary insurers not paying out so am trying to pre-empt that scenario (although I suppose ultimately there's nothing we can do if they don't, but I'm just curious).

Any help will be most appreciated.  I am very pleased that you were successful in your claim and hope your recovery and adaption to the thyriod hormones goes well for you.

hi my partner was diagnosed in July. has since had total thyroidectomy and is due RAI in just under 2 weeks. He has put in his claim form for critical illness but we are still waiting to hear. He was graded with T3 N1. Does anyone know if all thyroid cnacer is covered or does it depend upon grading???

    Thanks

I was diagnosed last month and put my critical illness claim in straight away. My GP and oncologist are just sending their stuff back then I wait to hear. I so hope it pays out. I won't have to work for the next 12 years unless I want to! Now that will be a result.

I think in most cases thyroid cancer is covered but each policy is often slightly different. My policy stated that the cancer had to be malignant and invasive.

Will let you know the outcome as soon as I do.
