Hi all - I had my thyroid removed three weeks ago as thyroid cancer was detected. After about a week I developed breathlessness after any exertion beyond sitting or slow walking. I was previously very fit. I read that this problem might be due to hypothyroidism - has anyone had this symptom and if so was the cause found and was it treated successfully? Thanks.
Hi Polychrome,
For a start I think I'd advise mentioning this to your medical team. Breathlessness can be caused by many things so you should get it checked out first. I found it "uncomfortable" to take a deep breath but I was told this could be due to 6hrs of anaesthetic.
With some people it can take a good while to get the synthetic thyroxine levels "right" which can indeed lead to symptoms but most people feel okay quite quickly. It can be helpful if you make a brief diary of how you feel to take to your next consultant appt.
3 weeks post op is early days, I hope your team can reassure you.

I had my thyroid removed in two operations and after the second had RAI. Three weeks later I experienced breathlessness even when not really exerting myself. No cause was found and things quickly settled down. I hope they do for you too
