Thyroid cancer

Hi, I recently got the thyroid cancer diagnosis. I have no symptoms and the nodule (11 mm) was found by accident. FNA showed it is papillary cancer.
I am currently waiting for a CT scan (neck and chest) and i have a follow up appointment in almost 3 weeks to learn about the treatment plan, but i was told i will have for sure a lobectomy and that it is not urgent.
Now, as i have moved few years ago into the UK and i never used NHS services (until this) i have no idea how the things are going on here and what to expect next. How long would i wait for a surgery appointment? Do i have to pick a hospital, a surgeon, even a day or i have nothing to say about that? How do I know the waiting times for each hospital (if more to choose from) and generally how everything works for a surgery appointment and what will happen next? Please, any informations you can give me about anything and everything are highly appreciated. Thank you

  • Hi Aluch welcome to the forum. It sounds like the tests etc are being done prior to the appointment in 3 weeks for the treatment plan to be developed. You will normally be allocated a surgeon specific to your type of Cancer. Unfortunately you won't get to pick a day as that rarely happens but you should know potential dates, timescales and allocation of surgeon at this follow up appointment. You can do Web searches for different hospitals in your area to find out waiting times. However, you will more than likely be allocated to a hospital as opposed to choosing in the NHS. Hope that information is useful and I feel sure that others will be along soon to add to my post and offer any other information. Best wishes.

  • Hi I had a11 mm papillary carcinoma thyroid  cancer mine was in the isthmus.I had a full thyroidectomy in july and I was diagnosed In april mine was also found incidental as I was having scans for melanoma. At present I'm still having bloods checked. The cancer only has a 1 percent chance of returning.

  • Your meet with your surgeon  first then I was given a date for the operation my operation was 3 weeks after meeting surgeon but they thought mine had spread because it was on the edge of the thyroid but when they took it out it was clear by 1mm. What part of thyroid is your on.
