Long Term Effects of RAI

Hey guys

This is a desperate attempt in the hope someone else has been through this.

I had 2 rounds of RAI - first in May 2021 and second in August 2023 after a recurrence.

Ever since RAI in August I have had elevated LFT (liver damage), my TSH is still 21 at a dose of 350mcg, and I am experiencing crippling stomach issues - heartburn, reflux, indigestion etc. I am constantly exhausted and I am just becoming more and more saddened by everything I am enduring.

Both my Endo and my GP are unable to help me saying they have never seen this before and just to wait it out and I will heal but it feels like these problems are too intense to resolve themselves

Has anyone experienced this and improved? What helped you?

  • Gosh it does sound as if you are being put through it at the moment @Tessa0703, I hope things improve for you soon.  I have had 2 rounds of RAI but the second didn't work and I am RAI refractory unfortunately.  I didn't have many symptoms fortunately, other than headache for a few days and tiredness.  Your dosage of Levothyroxine is very high too, I am on 125 mg and have been since my op 16 months ago.  Sorry I am not much help but hope things get better for you soon.

  • Hi  I’m going to have my second  dose of RAI in January due to recurrence. I wanted to comment, so, I can keep you updated if I feel the same as you.

What you’re going through sounds awful, I do hope the GP and Endo are right and that waiting it out has helped. Hope you’re feeling a bit better now?

  • Hi Tessa

That's an extraordinarily high thyroxine dose. I hope you won't mind me asking, but are you a particularly large person? I've known a few larger men have doses over 250 mcg but 350 is a lot.

Any possibility that somebody has confused TSH with FT4? 21 would be a good result for FT4 but a terrible one for TSH.

What country are you in? Is it possible your lab measures are different from UK or US labs?

If TSH is still so high at that level of dose, something is wrong with the way your body is absorbing the thyroxine.

Do you take it on an empty stomach with nothing more than a glass of cold water and then wait at least half an hour before you eat?

Do you take any other medications at the same time that might be interfering with the thyroxine absorption? Are you taking something for the stomach issues that might be interfering with the thyroxine?

sorry - you wanted answers and I've just given you a load more questions.

    Best wishes

    Barbara
