Hi guys, I had accident and fell off step ladders resulting in breaking ribs and collapsed lung, after week in hospital I was discharged, saw my cancer consultant whilst in hospital explained that I could not have iodine treatment due to the mri scans, I am really feel I have been kicked in the teeth, already waited since end of June

  • Hi. So sorry your treatment had to be postponed. But I do not think it will make any difference to the final outcome. I know loads of people in thyroid cancer group that had their RAI 6 months or more after the surgery and they are still fine.

Obviously all of us would like to get it done asap but as the doctors say it's not safe for you at the moment waiting few weeks will let you get better after the fall and you will be done and dusted in no time. If you cannot change the thing you are worrying about - stop worry as it cannot be changed. Good luck Slight smile

    1. Thanks for reply, I have poorly differential papillary cancer with mets in both lungs, consultant has said its aggressive and I need it urgently...
  • Sorry to hear that Tomo I hope you make a quick recovery and can get your RAI treatment soon.  I also have metastasis in my lung, not had my follow up appointment yet so don't know what to expect, not which cancer I have, but I was told I would need RAI treatment.

  • Hi Petal 66, do you know what your thyroid cancer is? Mine is poorly differential papillary cancer with mets in both lungs, just curious if we had same cancer, I'm 63 married kids now all grown up and flown nest, keep Positive regards Tomo

  • No I don't @Tomo, I was told when I was diagnosed that it was most likely either Papillary or Follicular, but I do have my follow up appointment this Thursday and am assuming I will be given more details.  I am 66 with kids also who have flown the nest.  I hope you manage to get your RAI treatment soon, it must be stressing you out.  I was told that the nodules in my lung are very small and they did seem to both play it down it terms of successfulness of treatment, but at the same time looked very sorry for me when I had my diagnoses.  When you look online and find out that because your cancer has spread to lymph nodes and lung and your age, then the percentage drops quite a lot in terms of survival, but I don't have all the details yet and hopefully will find out what's what on Thursday.  I am trying to stay positive, in fact I think I am in denial mostly.  It all came out of the blue to be honest.

  • @petal66,good luck tomorrow, let me know how you get on, keep Positive enjoy each day and find things to distract you from over thinking things that worries you we are always here for one another regards Tomo x

  • Thank you @Tomo it is nice to know that we can speak to others who are  going through the same thing.  Did you say you could not have RAI, just re-read your initial message and I had assumed it was postponed because of your accident, nowwondering if you meant you could never have it.  If not what treatment will you be able to have?

    • Thanks @ Petal, my consultant is having difficulty in getting my RAI due to shortage of staffing, I then had an accident in my garden when I fell off step ladders and broken ribs and had collapsed lung my cancer consultant visited me whilst 8 was in hospital and he informed me that of mri scans I couldn't have treatment for another 6 months. How did you get on yesterday Petal 66
  • That seems such a long time to wait for crucial treatment @Tomo, sorry to hear this.  Thank you also for asking about my appointment yesterday which went well.  I discovered that my right hand side vocal cord paralysis was due to the cancer being wrapped around it and when he removed it the thyroid came away with it.  I will not regain my vocal cord on that side but the other side is working well, although my voice is weak and has not regained strength yet, but I am being referred to a specialist in that area in around 2 months.  Who knows it may well be much better by then, I hope so.  He removed 60 lymph nodes of which 14 were cancerous, and the two nodules in my lung are so tiny they cannot do a biopsy (thank goodness as I didn't fancy that at all) nor any other treatment other than RAI which is being arranged and I will hear back shortly after the referral back to the original hospital, which is much nearer and convenient for me.  So hopefully the RAI will blast anything left of the thyroid and elsewhere including the lung nodules.  He did say the nodules may well have been there for a long time and were not highlighted until I had my CAT scan.  After all that I forgot to ask what type of cancer it was, I can't believe I forgot.  Anyway I am sure it will turn up in some notes either online at my doctor's or by letter from the hospital, as they always send me a copy of anything they have sent to the doctor.  I was just relieved there was no bad news and that everything has gone to plan and he said I was doing well and the wound has healed nicely.  I was worried about a small pea sized lump where the scar is and he said it was a stitch, so I guess that will just dissolve in time.  That was a relief.
