I'm 4 weeks after total thyroidectomy and central lymph nodes removal..I still have stage 5+ cancer on my windpipe,I'm going to have Iodine treatment for that..I have a question, I know I need MRI scan first, but I have just received an appointment for an ultrasound scan, would this be right? Thank you in advance.

  • I'm quite confused about a couple of things in your post.

I've never heard of any type of cancer being 'stage 5+' - are you sure that's correct?

Radioactive iodine only acts on thyroid cells - so unless your oesophageal (that's such a hard word to spell) cancer is directly related to the thyroid cancer (in effect, is thyroid cancer in the windpipe), I wouldn't expect that to be treated by iodine.

The iodine will clean up any left over thyroid cells or thyroid cancer from the surgery.

I'm really not sure why you'd get an ultrasound AFTER surgery or why you'd need it before iodine treatment. I'm wondering if the doctors have confused you with their programme of treatment.

Ultrasound is not very effective compared to MRI. I'd suggest to call the hospital and ask them to just check that things are being done in the right order.

Good luck and how are you feeling after your TT?

    Best wishes

    Barbara
