Hi all I hope this is ok to post here. I've not yet been diagnosed but feeling very anxious and wondered if any of you could share your experiences of symptoms.. around mid October I developed a sore throat just down right side, this came together with the feeling of hair stuck in my throat.. the sore throat I still have 2 month's on and the feeling of hair stuck in throat feels more like a lump now. Swallowing is becoming uncomfortable and last night I felt quite choked lying down. Went to see doc who identified 2 lumps down the centre of my neck (which both move up and down when I swallow) and mentioned she thought thyroid was enlarged. Thyroid function is normal but I've been referred for ultrasound on an urgent basis. Since I saw go a week ago, the lumps in thyroid area look and feel bigger, I have a hard lump on left side of neck in my cervical nodes and last night I noticed a swelling on my breastbone in the area of my thymus gland.. does this sound suspicious if cancer and should I be pushing the GP to chase this referral due the the extra bumps that have come up?? Sorry to go on .. I'm just a little concerned that something is going on and time is passing by. I'm a 39 year old female with a 3year old. Any advice is so very welcome x
You and your GP have done everything right.
Do you have a date for the ultrasound?
I can imagine you might be getting stressed that Christmas will get in the way. It might be reassuring to know that thyroid cancers (and you are still a way off any diagnosis) grow very slowly and are highly treatable but there's no harm in pushing the GP if that will make you feel a bit better.
A friend of mine always quotes that 90% of thyroid lumps are NOT cancer - they're just annoying lumps.
That said, if yours are big enough to constrict your windpipe, you may well need to get them out, cancer or not. I remember my GP telling me "If you can't breathe and start to turn blue, call 999" - that threat of not breathing was a lot more urgent than any threat from the cancer.
Best wishes

Thank you so much Barbara that really does put my mind at rest, I've literally just come off the phone to the hospital now, decoded to go direct and bypass gp and they've booked me in this Friday at 10.45am. do you know if they find anything suspicious do they take biopsy there and then or does that get rebooked? Lady on the phone didn't know but I'd rather be prepared!! Thank you so much for replying xx
That's a very good question and my not so good answer is 'probably, it depends'.
If you're seeing a regular ultrasonographic, my guess is they won't stab you in the thyroid and take a biopsy at the same time.
If the US is being done by a consultant, they might..
But I'm too late getting back to you so you now know more than I do. Did the just US or do a biopsy as well?
Best wishes
Barbara
