Hi all
im new to this forum so hi!
I had a right partial thyroidectomy 3 months ago and have really piled on the pounds. Has anyone else had this following surgery?
I haven’t had my thyroid function bloods yet a there was a mix up and they only did full blood count post op ♀️
just wondered if anyone had my advice please? Thanks
Have they put you on levothyroxine post surgery? This is a necessity for those of us who’ve had a TT (or both sides removed separately), but many who kept the second lobe can make enough thyroid hormone to not need the pills.
I wonder if maybe you second lobe isn’t making enough thyroid hormone to stop you going slightly hypo, which can stop down your metabolism and hence weight gain (* NOT MEDICAL ADVICE JUST AN EDUCATED GUESS *)
I would contact a medical professional (GP, Endo etc) and get bloods done. If your thyroid function comes back low then they might stick you on levo
Sorry to hear you are having to deal with this.I had one half my thyroid removed and bloods were ok. When I was not on meds and thyroid levels ok I was walking a lot and lost 5kilos. After my cancer diagnosis I had my remaining thyroid removed and went on to levothyroxine. My dose has been reduced twice and whilst my thyroid tests are ok on both occasions I put on 1.5kilos. The advice I get is that once your thyroid function is normal weight gain or loss should not be an issue. Good luck.
Hi, I'm new too. I had left lobe removed 6 weeks ago and after histology showed I had hashimotos syndrome which is a form of hypothyroid so I have been piling on the pounds. I have my completion thyroidectomy last week and ws put on levothyroxine, vitD and calcichew. I feel tired all the time and really low in mood, I'm hoping when the levothyroxine is at the correct dose I will feel brighter as I already take antidepressants and they are not touching my low mood.
Good luck and I hope you get sorted soon
Gaining weight after surgery is not a big problem if you gain a few pounds gradually. Rapid weight gain over a long time can be a concern. Perhaps I'm too naive about this question, but I didn't pay attention to a few extra kilograms after the operation. Moreover, I got rid of them very quickly. Then I looked through the lumen metabolism tracker review and decided to join the weight loss community and learn more about options for improving metabolism. Professional nutritionists can explain many processes, and such information is never superfluous.
I too have put on weight - almost 5kg after my RAI 3 months ago. My Levothyroxine has been increased as I was having issues with mood, constipation and hair loss. But now the oncologist is saying that my thyroxine levels are good and not contributing to the weight gain. What is the level supposed to be?
Hi. After thyroid removal and RAI my oncologist advised her plan was that my dose of levothyroxine would be set at a level which would heavily suppress my TSH for a period of 12 months. My level was often below 0.1 and I felt reasonably well. After 12 months plan was dose would be reduced to get TSH to between 0.4 and 2. On reduced dose TSH went over 2 and I have put on 3kg this year whilst feeling more tired. Dose now increased and blood tests this week but I did think that it would not take so long to get to right dose for me. Weight gain recognised as issue by BTF and they are starting an online weight loss group this month
