Hi,

My names silawan, I’m 23yrs old, I’ve recently been diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer, I’ve already had the right side of my thyroid out as this is where the lump was found. I’ve now been told I need to have the left side out. My main concern is spreading? Like lots of people said with the whole Covid situation looks like it’s going to be a long wait for op no. 2.

Just a quick question, I’ve also recently been made redundant from my job as cabin crew, I’ve been told I can maybe put some sort of disability claim through but I’m not really sure on the lengths of it so like what I’m entitled to claim? Really struggling to get another job at the moment and if anyone can give any advise that would be amazing.

Thank you so much

Silawan x

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to read that you've recently been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and I do understand what a scary and confusing time this will be for you. Although I didn't have the same type of cancer as you, I think that anyone who's ever had cancer will tell you that they've worried about the possibility that it might have spread. The best person to talk to about these worries would be your CNS as she/he will have access to your medical records.

If it's not easy to get in touch with your CNS then you could post your question in the ask a nurse section of the community and one of the specialist nurses will aim to reply within 2 working days.

To find out what benefits you might be entitled to can I suggest that you give the welfare rights team on the Macmillan Support Line a call on 0808 808 0000. Click here to be taken to the page which will tell you what information you should have to hand to get the most out of your chat with the welfare team. It's free to call and they're available every day from 8am to 8pm. You might also like to have a look through this information on benefits and financial support.

When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hello Silawan

Which country are you living in and who are you thinking you could make a claim from, please?
