Elevated TSH

Hi Everyone

i was wondering if anyone can advise if elevated tsh will

likely result in another round of RAI?

I had RAI in Jan 2019 after thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid cancer.

i had an appt on Tuesday with the endocrinologist to follow up on my dosage as i had a baby 7 weeks ago.

my tsh was elevated and she told me she was going to request an ultrasound and uptake scan. I just got a letter in from the surgeon consultant bringing my September appt forward to start of august so getting a bit worried now

  • TSH levels do not get elevated by cancer recurrence. High TSH only indicates that your dose is too low. Increasing your thyroxine dose will bring down the TSH.

If you had a baby so recently, you were probably given a dose during pregnancy that had you at a higher TSH than would be the target if you weren't pregnant. That's because too low a TSH can damage the cognitive development of a foetus.

Now the baby is out, your consultant should be aiming to get your TSH down to lower than the level that a person with a healthy thyroid would have.

The letter from your consultant is most likely COMPLETELY unrelated to your TSH result. The only indicator of recurrence is Thyroglobulin (Tg) not TSH.

All medical appointments have been getting moved around. Most likely your consultant's secretary didn't schedule any appointments until they thought the Covid crisis would be over and probably now finds it's safe to have you back earlier than they originally planned.

    Best wishes
