Raised ALT levels/liver function

Hi all, I wondered if I could seek some advice please. I underwent some radioactive iodine treatment for thyroid cancer in December 2019 and was given the all clear in February 2020. Recently my blood tests results are showing raised ALT levels suggesting that there is something going on with my liver function. Has anyone experienced anything similar to this or could anyone advise what could be the cause of my raised ALT levels? I am waiting to have a scan done to see what the problem could be but this could take a couple of weeks.

Thank you

  • Heya Sabah,

I'm going to say welcome to the forum, because I don't think I've seen your name before. But if you have been around, oops! Sorry! Lol

I'm sorry to hear that you've a new worry going on. One of the most common causes of raised levels is fatty liver disease. Sorry to ask, but are you overweight at all? How's your cholesterol level? Alternatively, do you take a lot of Ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatories?

All of these things can cause ALT levels to rise, and more often than not a change in diet can sort things out.

So fingers crossed that's all it is!

Hi Lass, thanks for replying. I've posted on this forum before but thank you for being so welcoming. I believe that I am overweight as I put on a lot of weight with the thyroid cancer in a short period of time. Do you think it could be my weight causing the raised ALT levels? I have mentioned my weight to my GP before but they always seem hesitant to admit that it was the cancer symptoms leading to my weight increasing. I believe that my cholesterol levels are fine and I don't take any ibuprofen or anti-inflammatories.

I have a telephone appointment booked with the GP in a few weeks to discuss my blood test results further but thought it might be worth mentioning on here too.

  • Heya,

Sorry for not recognising the name!

But yes, when you put on weight then you can put on weight all over. So it's not just the weight you can see with the love handles and double chins, etc. Fat can be accumulated around and on/in your organs.

The liver is particularly susceptible to fat, and fat can be deposited throughout the liver which puts stress on it, raising levels. The scan of the liver should show them if there are any fat deposits on it or not, so it's not too hard to diagnose.

So if you've put a decent amount of weight on, then the raised levels could be your liver raising the alarm that there's fat currently hurting it and it needs help.

I have a fatty liver, and with a diet change I've brought my levels down quite a lot. Mine is too far gone to be cured completely, but then I've always been on the bigger side of things. But if found early then it can be completely reversible if this is what it is.

    Hope that helps!

Hi Lass, thank you for explaining things, you've been a great help. I'll start to implement more diet and lifestyle changes as I think it is my weight which is causing issues with my liver.

    Thanks again,
