Tomorrow I have my RAI! It's been a crazy 5 months but hopefully this is the beginning of the end now.
I have just had my 2and injection and I've got to come back at 9am tomorrow.
The only thing I'm worried about is being away from my 4 little ones for 8 days (my physicist hopes it only 6).
How did everyone else cope keeping easy from family members?
Also I forgot to ask them (I'll do it tomorrow but just for now) will my immune system be compromised at all after the treatment?
Thank you
Gaynor xx
Heya Gaynor!
Got your bag all packed with some sour sweets, diluting juice or something interesting to drink, paracetemol/Ibuprofen, LID friendly snacks, and things to keep you occupied?
Can't help on the family question because I live alone in Leeds, and most of my family are in Edinburgh! But honestly, the time flies and if you drink enough then the chances are it won't even be 6 days, and it'll just be the hospital stay!
I'm going to say that no, your immune system won't be compromised by the RAI. It should go in your mouth, be absorbed into the body, fly around a bit, be absorbed by any remaining thyroid cells, then be pooed/weed/sweated out. And most of that will happen in the first 24 hours after taking the pill. So it shouldn't go anywhere near your bone marrow and your immune system.
It's only folks like myself who have immune system problems, because the thyroid cancer is in my bones. So the RAI is absorbed into my bones and ends up killing off my bone marrow. It's why we're not doing anymore RAI on me until we absolutely have to, because I do get quite ill with it. But that's also cause I've had 4 doses! Lol. My first dose, I had 0 issues at all with it, which is the norm.
Good luck, and enjoy the peace and quiet! (Hopefully)

@lass can the injections give you headaches and make you feel sick?
Because I appear to have had a funny turn, I feel weak, shaky, sick and I've got a headache
Heya,
Yup, they can. Sorry you're suffering a bit there!
Remember, the injections are artificially putting you into a hypo state. So you can get some of the hypo symptoms for about a week until it wears off. But the sickness side is usually just 24 hours. You should also be given an anti nausea tablet before the RAI tablet too. So that'll help if you're not right by tomorrow.
But usually it shifts after a bit. Fingers crossed!

Good luck with your RAI
I have had my thyroid removed 7 weeks ago and waiting on endocrine on 18th March. Then hopefully some word on my RAI.
Keep us all updated
Lots of hugs

no, she only went in today, so she won't be home until Friday.
Gaynor, hope you're all settled into your room and you're feeling OK. Fingers crossed tea is edible and decent!
