Recovering from thyroidectomy question!

Hi all. I just had a total thyroidectomy 7 days ago due to a highly suspicious nodule, and I had a lot of non suspicious nodules and swelling along with Hashimoto’s for years now. I haven’t gotten my pathology results yet. My surgeon said he went ahead and removed some lymph nodes near my thyroid just in case there was cancer. I have a regular thyroidectomy incision that is just a few inches long.

So, my recovery has been going fine overall. However I’ve noticed in the past couple days, the right side of my neck feels almost back to normal but the left side of my neck is still quite stiff, and there is that “lump” feeling when I swallow but I only feel it on the left? I also feel the “lump” when I turn my head either direction. It feels as though it’s right behind the incision or a little above it. I cannot feel it through the skin with my fingers or see it on the outside. I also have a swollen lymph node at the top of my neck below my left ear that has been swollen since January 2019. I had two physicians ultrasound this lymph node including my referring ENT who both said it did not look worrisome to them. So this node is still swollen, and it feels as though it is “pulling” at this node when I stretch my neck to the right. I’ve also experienced occasionally a “clicking” sound when I swallow. Is that normal? Is any of this normal? I have not felt any trouble breathing so I’m assuming whatever it is, it is not a huge deal and will hopefully clear up within the next week. My follow up appt is on the 11th. I figured maybe the left is where he removed some nodes and maybe cut through muscle that is still inflamed. Or could it be scar tissue already?

Thank you so much in advance for your thoughts. I am trying not to let anxiety get the best of me through all this.

  • Heya,

Welcome to the forum, though I'm sorry you find yourself here.

Just wondering, are you still taking the anti-inflammatories the hospital should have told you to take - so long as you're not allergic etc to them? It sounds like you've got some swelling at the op site still, which is perfectly normal, and so need to still be taking them to help heal and also help with the discomfort.

All lymph nodes are connected to one another through the lymphatic system. So if you've had some removed then there will be stiches, swelling, and scarring around and through the area. So it makes sense that you'll feel a bit of a tug in one area as you move another, as it's all connected.

The clicking is weird, but totally normal. Lots of us had that and it was explained to me years ago, but I'm afraid I can't remember what it was they said it was. However it did vanish in time, so don't be overly concerned.

Just look after yourself, keep asking questions about things that concern you, and all will be well. But for now, you sound perfectly normal.

Thank you so much!! I feel better about all that now. Of course upon waking up this morning I was able to feel new swelling on the right side of my neck now. It’s not visible but I can feel it with my hands. It’s not effecting anything but I had to call the nurse because I am so anxious/paranoid about a hematoma and not making it to the hospital in time...she said if it were a hematoma it would grow large very quickly and would be hard. This swelling is squishy and hasn’t grown since I noticed it a couple hours ago. I just need to calm down I think, easier said than done!

  • Heya,

Yeh, Ibuprofen will help you with that too. ;)

It's scary having an op and not knowing what to expect. I've called the hospital a couple of times myself after procedures to ask if what I was experiencing was normal. Once it was, twice it wasn't. Better safe than sorry so long as you're keeping calm and logical about it all.

Have you tried any mindfulness apps or meditation exercised? They might help you with the anxiety.
