So i have just had my 3 week follow up phone call after my tt.

I no longer need to take calcium which is good but apparently I'm hypo and my TSH is 6.50.

Now I'm new to all this and I honestly dont know what is a normal tsh level?

What am I wanting it to be? Does it need to be higher or lower?

any info would be amazing!

  • Hey there Gaynor,

    That's quite a surprise of a level.

Just a quick question before I get into the specifics, what dose of thyroxine have you been taking and when and how have you been taking it?

  • Is it bad ?

I have 75mg one day and then 100mg the next. I have it every morning at 7am with water and I'm waiting til at least 8 before I eat anything.

  • Heya,

It's not horrific, but it's something that does make me go hmmmm.

So, ideally after you've had a diagnosis of thyroid cancer, you want your TSH to be as close to 0.1 as possible. A normal range is a maximum of 4, and a minimum of 0.4. However that's just roughly, some labs have a minimum of 0.27, and a max of 5. But 0.4 and 4 is an average.

So you very definitely need to be lower, which means, hopefully, whoever called you has told you to increase your thyroxine?

The reason I'm saying hmmmm, is because on a dose of 100/75, then I wouldn't really have expected it to be so high after such a short time period. So I'm wondering if maybe your thyroid wasn't fully working before, so the thyroxine is slowly bringing you back down into the normal range. I'm going to get a little bit personal here, so feel free not to answer..... but could I please ask what your height and weight is? Thyroxine dose is quite finicky, and weight does play a part in it which is why I ask.

I'm also wondering, when were you taking your calcium?

  • I'm 5'2" and 7 stone 7lb.

Because I'm quite small they didnt want to start me off high.

I had a thyroid function test a year ago whilst pregnant and they said it was all fine then.

I've not been told to up it just yet, the person I spoke to needed to speak to the dr before getting back to me.

  • Were you taking the calcichews at least 4 hours after your thyroxine?

  • Well then, I think I've exhausted all of the things that might have been interfering with the thyroxine, so it sounds like you might just be one of those people who needs more than would be expected. Do chase them up on Monday though regarding your dose, because you def don't want to be up too high for too long. Both for your health and because of the cancer. Need that all properly suppressed.
