How much does your TSH level vary?

Hi All,

I had a regular blood test last week and my TSH has gone from 1.1 to 2.5 with no change of thyroxine dosage.  This did strike me as a bit weird and maybe just a rouge test result but I just wondered whether anyone else has had any similar experiences and if so what did you do?

Many thanks

Neil

  • Heya Neil,

It does fluctuate as we use our T4, convert to T3, then top up our meds again. I'm not entirely sure of a normal range of fluctuation however I'm afraid.

However, if you have a look through some of the recent discussions, then you'll find a few of us have had increases in our TSH recently. So the standard questions to ask first are:

    • Have you put on any weight since your last blood test?
    • Have you started taking any new medications?
    • Have you started taking any new supplements?
    • Have you changed when you take your thyroxine?
    • Have you changed what or when you eat/drink after taking your thyroxine?
    • Have you definitely taken your thyroxine every day?

If nothing is different, then I'd wait and see what happens at your next test. Maybe have your GP run a TFT in 3 months to see what's happening. Then take it from there.

Thanks for your reply .  The strange thing is that none of those things you listed have happened.

I've had a good chat with the GP and we decided to increase my dosage a little from 175 daily to 175/200 every other day and do another test in 3 months to see where we are.
