Thyrogen injections

Hello all

I'm just after a bit of advice.

I've had tt and follow up radiotherapy and all went well.

Im having thyrogen injections again followed by a blood test. . There was a gap of 3 days between 2nd injection and blood test but now the hospital have changed the dates of my injections.  They were monday/Tuesday now they are Wednesday/Thursday.  Which is fine but my blood test is meant to be on the following friday.

My question is do I need to delay my blood test to the following monday now ? Is the time scale between injections and follow up blood test relevant?

I did ask the hospital when they rang but they said come for scan (which is now before injections) and blood test as arranged.

Thanks

  • Heya Lumpless!

    Nice to see you again.

Just a quick thing, I'm presuming you had RAI rather than radiotherapy? They are different treatments and work differently, with very different side effects. Just in case you get any odd looks if you say radiotherapy to any medical folks!

They used to do the blood test on the same day as the second thyrogen injection. But after a trial, found that it was more accurate a couple of days later as it gave the body time to artificially increase the TSH, and the remaining thyroid tissue to start producing TG again.

I think you're better having the bloods done on the Friday, as by the Monday things will have started to normalise again. I've usually seen the tests done with a one day gap rather than a two. So def better safe than sorry by getting it taken on the Friday.

  • Yes rai

I get mixed up sometimes!!. Thanks for the reply.

The hospital have changed the appointments again now so the blood test will be timed correctly.  Just a delay caused by them having no stock of thyrogen .

Any idea how long it takes to get results from a thyroglobulin blood test? I've heard its weeks which seems a bit odd and I want to be sure they're available for when I see my consultant.

    Thanks x

I am waiting for blood results too.

I know each hospital is different but I was told the standard thyroid tests take 2-3 days but thyroglobulin is tested normally once a week. I was told they were held until they have a least 2 samples before running the tests. At the hospital I go to there are only 2 doctors who would order the test but predominantly it’s the nuclear consultant.

Hope all your timings work out.
