Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone could share their post-surgery experiences of pain? I've spent quite a lot of time reading through forum posts here (feel like I know quite a few of you already! hi all!), but not sure if my current experience is at all typical or not. I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer a couple of months ago, which although small (7mm) seemed to have spread quite aggresively to a lot of neck lymph nodes which were enlarged.
I had pretty extensive surgery 3 weeks ago to remove my thyroid, all my neck lymp nodes on the right, and a number of lymph nodes on the left. Think I was in surgery for 7.5 hours. Spent a week in hospital post-op, with a drain in my neck at the side and also at the front for a few days. Pretty extensive scar that goes up to my right ear, with loss of sensation all around the wound.
The pain that's bothering me the most right now is this incessant right shoulder pain that the max dose cocodamol seems to do nothing for. I can't tolerate having a bra strap anywhere on the shoulder at all. Obviously this isn't at the wound site, but I'm assuming it's somehow connected with having all my lymph nodes out at that side. Has anyone else experienced shoulder pains like this?
Also having sharp stabby lower jaw pains on that side (again, totally resistant to pain meds), but had these pre-surgery too - worried that it's somehow got into my jaw bone. These pains were what actually got me investigated and diagnosed in the first place, when my dental surgeon ordered scans after she couldn't find a cause, but still no closer to finding out whether they're related or not. Anyone else had jaw pain related to their thyroid cancer?
Grateful for all your responses
Hi
Sorry you are in so much pain.
i can’t help you with the shoulder pain but I had experience with jaw pain. Prior to surgery I had a very sore jaw, which went after surgery. I did however have the most awful toothache, which I couldn’t understand as I had been at the dentists shortly before my operation. I was taking pain killers for the tooth not for my neck. My dentist told me I would have had a tube down my throat for the length of the operation which would be vibrating gently off my tooth, which caused pain. This could have been the case with your jaw.
Your body has a lot of healing to do, be kind to yourself and take plenty rest.
i hope the pain goes soon

Heya
I was just wondering how you were doing now with your shoulder pain?
Did someone refer you to a physiotherapist or give you some physiotherapy exercises to do, as well as some massages?

Hi Lass,
Thanks so much for your message, and sorry it's taken me a bit of time to respond!
My surgeon referred me to physio and to the chronic pain clinic after I discussed my issues with him, and I'm happy to say that my issues seem to have been resolved now.
I hadn't realised (unbelievably), but I had very restricted movement in my right arm, couldn't adduct more than 15 degrees etc, and none of the various pain medications (inc. morphine) were helping me. Physio was great in helping me regain my movement over the past couple of months, and that seems to have resolved the issues with pain, which I only have very occasionally now with too much physical exertion. I suspect there was some superficial damage to my spinal accessory nerve which needing a bit of helping along to heal up; very relieved it seems to have done so, as was worried the damage was long-term.
If anyone in future has similar issues, I can really recommend physio in first instance. Was sore, but it worked!
Heya,
Very glad to hear that things have improved for you, that's brilliant to hear!
It really annoys me that physio exercises aren't automatically given to people straight after surgery, with a follow up with a physio a few months after a neck dissection to make sure that all is ok. So many people don't realise there's an issue and just live with the pain, and GPs don't know the intricacies of the surgery to know a physio is needed, so just prescribe pain pills.
*Grumps*
Anyways, very pleased you're well on the way to being 100% again!
Always here if you need us!
