Evening all. I am new to this group and since weds I've been going out of my mind with worry. It's been three yrs since having a total thyroidectomy after being diagnosed. I was at my six month check up this weds when the doctor felt a gland that was up. I had no idea as I didnt feel it. Anyway they want me to have an ultrasound but sent me away without a date for this. I have an anxiety disorder which I told them about. I'm absolutely pooping myself and going out of my mind with worry.

  • Hello, Thedinnerlady73, welcome to the community tho it's  the club nobody really wants to join.

Do u have meds for your anxiety disorder? If not, now might b the time to get some short term ones!

Also, do u have a cancer nurse specialist u can ask when the ultrasound's  likely to b,  or  the consultant's secretary?

Once u have a date, things won't seem so bad, even tho waiting is the pits.

Do let us know how u get on with the ultrasound

Fear of the unknown is the worst thing. Once we know what we're facing, we find the strength to deal with it.

Thanks for your reply. I have started meds this week as my anxiety disorder has been ongoing for the last four years. I tried three different medications to which I had very bad reactions too. I have been battling anxiety without medication for two years but it was just too much so I'm on a medication which finally agrees with me. Although I've only been on it for five days . I could ring the hospital on Monday and ask when my scan will be but I'm so scared as the way my brain is wired it's always worse case scenario.  I hate having anxiety ! It's like I've been possessed.  Sorry for moaning and going on a bit.

  • Heya

Welcome to the forum, but I'm sorry you have to be here!

Sorry to hear that the doctor has felt a gland up. On the positive side, it's that time of year when all the bugs are creeping about and raising their heads. So it's very possibly nothing more than a lymph node doing what lymph nodes do.

Then you've got the more unlikely case of it not being a lymph node at all, and being a thing called a lipoma. This happened to me you see. Lol. Doctor thought I had a lymph node raised when I found a lump. Sent for an ultrasound who said it wasn't a lymph node at all and instead is a very common fatty lump that on average, everyone has 6 of before they hit 40!

Then of course, yes, it could be the cancer being a baddie. When was your last set of blood tests, and was your TG raised at all?

The thing is with the appointments system is it doesn't work so fast. Your doctor needs to put in the referral, the referral needs picked up by the appropriate person, who then puts you in whichever queue your doctor asked for. So calling your nurse won't actually help as they don't have access to the bookings system. What you could do is call your hospitals reception and ask to speak to whoever books in the ultrasound appointments. I've done that a few times for things. They'll then be able to tell you if they have the referral, what timescale wS put on it, and they may be able to give an estimate of if that's likely or not. Also, if you are available, you can tell them you're able to take short notice cancellations if they have a list for them.

But as I'm sure you remember from your diagnosis, in the world of thyroids, nothing moves quickly!

    Hope that helps!
