Hi.
I had Total Thyroidectomy for Thyroid Cancer in 2017 followed by left neck dissection and RAI. Follow up WBS a year later which they were happy with {there was a tiny bit of uptake in the neck on left but it was "statistically insignificant" apparently. Got discharged from Oncologist early this year. My TG has always been less than 0.1 but I have antibodies but these were lowering.
However, I had a baseline US early this year where they noticed something in the thyroid bed. They said my remaining lymph nodes were all fine. My Endo wasn't happy with the detail of the report as he couldn't quite figure out what was going on so her waited a few months and sent me for another US scan at what he reckons is a better more accurate place for it. This time I had the senior consultant and now she has spotted "a speck" in one of my lymph nodes on the right. This area didn't show anything on the WBS. Also a bit of thyroid tissue left over.
Ive really had a bit of a panic that things are recurring. She has referred it back to my Endocrinologist [who is very good] and said that it will go to the MDT for. a decision on what to do.
Im just basically wondering if anyone else has experience of a similar situation and what happened with them? If its a recurrence in just one lymph node will they remove just the suspicious one or do another neck dissection? Are they likely to reoperate to remove a bit of left over thyroid tissue? or just watch and wait?
Really interested in hearing others experiences of similar recurrence scenarios
Thanks for reading. Not enjoying being back on the crappy cancer rollercoaster
Hello again Phoenix,
Sorry to hear you're back on the rollercoaster of testing and waiting for results and decisions.
I've not had a similar situation myself, but I have read and chatted to people who have been in a similar place to yourself. The problem is, there are too many variables to even guess at what will happen next. Everything you've suggested is possible, along with giving you another dose of RAI to try and zap everything rather than operating again. It all comes down to your original lump and how it looked, if there were any variations, how the capsule looked, and probably a whole host of other things. Then there's how things are looking in your neck now. All topped off with how cautious/gung ho your consultant and the others in the MDT are.
Whatever they decide though, you know you can cope with it as you've done it before. You also know you've got us here to help you through and chat to whenever you need to. I'm just sorry I couldn't give you a more definitive answer.

Hi Lass.
Thanks so much for replying. I know there's no definitive answer. So many variables .
I just hate this waiting on the MDT's decision thing so much. I am a control freak so the lack of control of it drives me to distraction . Don't even know when or if they will meet to discuss it and am waiting to hear from the Endo so its all so vague and up in the air.
On the plus side I appreciate that they are being very cautious and double checking everything. I moved from my last Endo as he was totally uninterested in making sure everything was ok so its greatthat this new guy and his team is very much making sure of everything and im grateful for that. Its not doing my nerves much good tho
Thanks for your reply ️️

Oh I'm with you! I'd much rather have someone take their time and double check than just write things off as nothing without checking it out. However the waits involved, can be insane! And of course, in that time, your head can do all manner of things to you and come up with all sorts of scenarios!
Usually....... usually.... lol..... the MDT meet once a week. However, it's holiday period so if one of them is off and they need their opinion, then they'll need to wait until they are back. By which point another might be off. Then once they're all there, they've got lots to catch up on, so everyone will be dealt with in order of urgency and then order of date.
So I'd give them a max of a month, then I'd be calling the secretary to nicely chase and ask what's happening and what the timeline is looking like.
But hopefully it won't take that long!

yes. thankfully my new consultant and the lady. he sent me to for the scan are great so I finally feel in good hands with them [which I didn't before ]
Good idea. Ill give it a month or so and then chase up nicely if I don't hear anything.
Thanks Lass ️️ xx
