Palpitations at night

Hi everyone, does anyone else suffer from palpitations at night just as they’re falling asleep? It doesn’t happen every night but I’ve noticed it happening more recently. I’m guessing this is linked to having suppressed TSH levels but it’s a bit scary has anyone else had the same thing?

    I'm sorry to hear you're finding the palpitations scary at the moment. That must make it difficult for you to drop off to sleep. I can't say whether or not they might be linked to having suppressed TSH levels but I can tell you that I have them too on and off, and have done for many years. I have other medical conditions and have noticed that certain drugs can cause the problem. Also, I do find that lying on my side in bed, I am aware of them far more than at other times and it can feel scary, so you're not alone there. I think it must be due to the position I lie in. I don't know if that is the same for you?

    Ah, good old palpitations. 

    I don't suppose you know when your T4 and TSH were last checked and what the numbers were do you? 

    Palpitations in thyca folks are often linked to too high T4, which is why I'm asking for your numbers. However there are lots of other things that can cause palpitations, like stress. That's probably the most common one. 

    I get palpitations a lot, and I've also got a really high heart rate too. This is because to get my TSH down to the 0.05 they want it at, my T4 is up at 26 or 27. I know through experience that at 29, I black out. Lol. Though that was before my blood pressure and beta blocker pills. So I might be able to go higher than that now, though I def don't want to!!! 

    If you know your numbers then I'll be able to have a better idea of what's going on, and then depending on how long ago they were done it might be worth getting them done again. But if they're all fine, it might just need to be some relaxation techniques as bedtime is when our brains start unpacking everything and stressing us out. Good of them to that eh! Lol

  • Thanks Lass and Kit, it’s good to know that I’m not the only one. I’m having blood tests soon before I see my consultant in September so I’ll get everything checked then. At my last appointment in June I was told the TSH was where he would like it to be but I didn’t ask for the numbers. I’m wondering whether it might be anxiety, I don’t feel particularly anxious but I think I’ve experienced this in the past before all of this thyroid stuff started xx

    Yeh, you should always ask for the numbers and keep track of them somewhere. Just so that you know what's going in your body and so you know how you feel at each level. It means that if issues like this come up, then you can guess if it's a medication issue or not and get bloods done if needed. 

    Anxiety can definitely be in your subconscious and not conscious thoughts. So maybe try a warm soothing drink - hot chocolate, or warm honey and milk - before bed, as well as some meditation or mindfulness exercises. See if that helps get things off your mind so it doesn't affect your heart.
