Hi, just found this online community and can i say i feel slightly relieved as this week i’ve felt very much on my own.

On monday i unexpectedly found lump on neck. Went to doctors who referred me for urgent blood tests (that day) and i paid privately for an ultrasound yesterday. The ultrasound showed a 3cm nodule in right thyroid. Having checked rest of of thyroid and lymph nodes hes saying its just the one nodule. They dont seem too concerned over it but have referred me for a needle biopsy (i’m going private next week as cant wait). When i spoke to ultrasound guy and the doctors who’ve read the reports they dont seem too concerned, but all i’ve done this week is read google on this and now worried my symptoms are same as thyroid cancer. Currently feel like i’m going mad.

please can anyone help with advice, are nodules common? is thyroid cancer as slow growing as people say? If they take half thyroid away do you need to take supplements? I’m an active person and worried about energy levels if i do have to have surgery. Also weight gain. I’ve not eaten in 5 days due to worry and i now dont know whether to believe doctors or not.

any advice for an over worried, over stressed and terrified woman.

thanks

Vicky

  • Hey there Vicky,

    Welcome to the forum.

Out of interest.... Chocolate, dog, town, or other? Lol

Secondlt, step away from Google. The Internet is a great place for finding out info for homework, quizzes, proving people wrong, winning arguments, etc. But it is the WORST place to go when you're going through medical testing. You will find a lot of information, and most of it will be wrong, out of date, or totally irrelevant to you. But most of it will also make you worry more than you need to. So time to draw a line under Googling anything thyroid related.

Thyroid nodules are very common, and over 90% of them are completely benign. They can also sit there unnoticed for years, just not doing anything. The most common times nodules are found is when hormones are doing weird things. So for women that means puberty, pregnancy, and the menopause.

Most thyroid cancers are sloth like in nature, and are very slow growing.

If they give you a diagnostic hemi, then the answer to will you need thyroxine afterwards is a big old don't know I'm afraid. Some people do, while others don't because the remaining half steps up and takes up the slack. With or without thyroxine, there shouldn't be any problems with your energy levels. That worry is coming from too much Googling and reading stories of people with thyroid disease, not thyroid cancer.

I'd say that when you've got cancer, weight gain is the least of your worries. But again, that worry is coming from Google and the thyroid disease folks who blame everything wrong with them on their thyroid being removed or the medication they are on. Most of the time, it's complete rubbish.

There's no point in worrying about any of these things until you know what the lump is and what, if anything, they're going to do about it. After all, the FNA could come back saying everything is fine, no more treatment needed.

    Hey Lass,

firstly thanks for replying, cant tell you how nice it is to hear off someone regarding this. Got friends and family who know but they know as much as me about this.

yes i read you can have them for years undetected, just cant understand why now its flared/swollen up. Thats the worrying part. I feel absolutely fine in myself.

suppose i have to wait until results come back but its scaring me witless.

and i’ll stay off Google now or at least try. I know its the worst thing you can do.

i’m pleased i’ve found this page and everyone seems so friendly. Out of all the websites i’ve googled this week (and believe me its a lot), this is the only one i have seen with a forum for everyone to chat about their concerns etc. And i think its lovely, certainly made me feel a bit better.

Thank you very much for responding, and i’m going to be a regular on here trying to help others also if i can.

ps, ‘yorkie’ because i’m yorkshire (live in Hull Wink).

    thanks

  • Heya,

Well, we're pleased you found us!

There's a lot of experience and a lot of knowledge here, so you can probably find answers to most of your questions if you ask. It's much safer to ask here than trying to Google the answer, I promise! Lol. And yup, everyone in this group is lovely, and really helpful.

I usually say that there's no stupid or wrong questions, and I've certainly never seen one asked here, but in a FB group I help answer questions on, there was definitely a stupid one asked earlier in the week. "Is it normal to feel sick all the time?" So any question other than that, and you're all good. Lol

The best answer for why it's popped up now is probably "Just cause." There's really not usually a reason for why bodies do half the things they do. Or at least no reason science has found yet. Bodies are such complex things, that Dr's don't understand half of what happens and why. Still lots to learn and discover there, and everywhere.

And I'm waving to you from Leeds! Lol

    Hello all.

Just saying hi because I’m in the same boat. The limbo waiting game.

I have been having breathing problems since November (various GP’s kept changing my inhalers each visit; none were working).

Last week another GP saw me and instantly said he was concerned and booked me an urgent ENT Suspected Cancer appointment for yesterday. He also did bloods and an xray.

Yesterday morning I got a call from the ENT Specialist asking to bring me in straight away rather than wait until the afternoon appointment. However upon hearing me on the phone (bad stridor) he decided to phone the ward and get me admitted.

I spent 3 hours in Resus yesterday because the stridor was awful. Had the camera down my nose and a CT scan. Had the answer within 15 minutes that I’ve got a large growth on my thyroid. Got to wait until Monday for the correct team to do the biopsy but they’ve got me on the ward on oxygen and IV steroids whilst we wait to try and take some swelling off of my airway- so hard to breathe! Coughing and sucking in air... just hard. They said my airway is extremely compromised as it’s been squashed from the outside in.

Anyway I can’t sleep. They’ve not told me the measurements but they can also see and feel it from the outside. I think I can see it too but it takes up most of my neck. I can feel it; it’s rock hard and goes all the way round.

Sorry for gibbering on. By the way I’m 35 and a married mum of two (they’re 3 and 6).

  • Heya Maria,

Welcome to the forum, though I'm sorry you have to find yourself here!

I don't suppose they've said why on earth they are biopsying it rather than just whipping it out have they? Normally, yes, you'd biopsy a lump to see what it is and work out if it needs to come out or not. However when a lump gets so big that it's imposing on your trachea or oesophagus, it obviously needs to be removed regardless of what's causing the lump. It just seems unnecessary to put you through this weekend with breathing issues, when they could have whipped it out, you'd be more comfortable, and the lump would be off at the lab being dissected.

Anyways, I really hope the meds they have you on give you some relief and you manage to get some rest.

I'm 37 BTW, found my lump at 30.

Here for you whenever I can be. So do just shout!

Thank you for replying at this time of night (or should I say morning Zzz).

They said they can’t just take it out until they know what they’re dealing with. I’m pretty sure they explained to my husband about seeding (something about disturbing it can spread it if it’s bad).

I sound like darth Vader. It’s all the way round my neck. Maybe it’s too big to just cut out? I have no idea. How do I add a picture or is that not allowed?

Hi Lass. So sorry we’re in this scary boat together. They said I have several growths and the biopsies (needle aspiration I think it’s called) will be tomorrow. My airway is down to 3mm (average adult 15-20). They’re giving IV steroids and hourly nebulisers (adrenaline and sabutamol) to try and keep me as stable as possible. My little airway I have left is so inflamed and full of mucus. If my sats get to 85 again then they’re saying they will put me in an induced coma and breathe for me. I really don’t want that.

Just got to stay upright in this bed. They think one of the growths/ nodules (whatever they are) is bleeding internally which is why one is changing so quickly.

So frightening isn’t it? Are they keeping you in while you wait? I’m so tired :-(

sending you lots of love xxxx
