Voice going downhill

Hi All

My voice is really going downhill. I had my completion beginning of April and it wasn't too bad straight afterwards. It was dodgy after the hemi but got better before the 2nd op. My vocal chords were checked at the end of April and they were moving ok.

About 3 weeks ago I felt an unusual sharp burning pain in my throat and my voice went really husky for a few days. It got better but then this last week it's been really bad again, sometimes only managing a whisper. The pain has come and gone and the voice cuts in and out almost randomly sometimes. I don't feel unwell apart from fatigue so i don't think it's a virus.

I'm a classically trained singer but no chance of singing at the mo, I can only just speak. Is it too early to ask for speech therapy? Is there anything else it might be  -  I've seen a couple of people mention silent reflux before?

This is really getting me down. I spent an average of about 20 hours a week singing (3 choirs, lessons, practicing, performances etc) before all this and I'm struggling to make myself understood in basic conversations at the mo.

Thanks for reading!

  • Heya L,

Did you push your voice a bit too hard before you felt that burning pain?

One thing is that some viruses only give you one symptom. Just because your body fights it off, so it might only break through in one area.

It doesn't really sound like an operation issue, as that's pretty much always an immediate issue due to damage to the nerves and tendons in your neck.

Which leaves the silent acid reflux. There's not actually any way of diagnosing it really. The Dr just prescribes you the drug to stop it based on your symptoms, and if it works then great. So options are heading to the Dr to enquire about it, or try taking tums/rennies/gaviscon after each meal to see if it does anything for your voice. But I think I'd go for the GP option in this instance.

    Thanks Lass, that's helpful.

I may have used my voice more than I should, but not directly beforehand. I have to talk a lot at work.

My consultant said there was some mild muscle dysphonia after the 2nd op, but it didn't seem too bad at the time.

Think I'll have a chat with my GP re possible silent reflux.

    Thanks again, L x
