Tapering off calcium

Hi all,

Thanks again for all the v useful info on here.

I had my completion on 3rd April and definitely feel like I'm recovering much better from the surgery itself this time around.

My calcium levels dropped afterwards so was put on 2.5g calcium carbonate x 3 a day for week one, x 2 a day for week two and 1 a day for the final week then told to stop. I'm aware that I need to give my parathyroids a chance to kick back in again, but since dropping down to 2 a day on Thursday I've been having tingling round the mouth quite a bit and some pins and needles in my hands & limbs. Nothing major or awful, but it is noticeable. Also  tired & dizzy, but that could be the anaesthetic. I wasn't given any advice on this from the hospital apart from the dosage instructions, so I don't know if this is to be expected as the dose drops down or if I should be telling someone?

I've bought some extra calcium carbonate indigestion tabs as a precaution in case it gets worse, but just sticking to what  I've been told to take for now.

Cheers,

L

  • Hello

I didn't have to take calcium so I have no personal experience on this topic but it does seem to me that they docs have assumed that your calcium issue is only very temporary and that your parathyroids will recover. If you are getting tingles, they may be wrong.  You may well need longer. It's less than two weeks since your surgery and these things don't bounce back like trampolines.

It's good you've got some back up tablets but I think you should call the hospital and tell them this is happening as you may well need calcium for a longer period than the surgeon thought. Sadly some people have to take them forever - hopefully that won't be the case - but I fear you've been withdrawn a bit too quickly.

If somebody who DOES have experience comes along, listen to them ahead of me!

    Best wishes

    Thanks Barbara,

Have been in touch with hospital and they told me to get a GP appointment/blood test for today, which is sorted for this afternoon. Fingers crossed it's a temporary thing!

    All best,

    Elaine

  • Well done. Let's help they get to the bottom of this soon.

    Best wishes
