My last blood test results were tsh of 0.09 and tje hospital decreased my thyroxine from 125 a day to 100 as a result five weeks ago. I am now starting to suffer from constipation and really painful bloating both of which i havent suffered from for about 18 months. Could it be anything to do with the lower dose kicking in?

  • Hey there Jackie,

Do you know what your T4 was? And did they tell you why they were decreasing your dose?

Usually after thyca they like to suppress your TSH to 0.1. 0.09 is pretty darn close to perfect, so I'm surprised they changed your dose, especially a full 25 a day. Do you know what your target TSH is? And how long ago were you diagnosed?

It is possible that drops in medication can send you into the range of hypothyroidism, which can cause the gut to slow down. However I wouldn't expect a drop of 25, from a TSH of 0.09, to be enough to cause that to happen.

I'd suggest heading to the GP with a fecal sample, and asking to be tested for IBS or other stomach and bowel issues. Or possibly even food intolerances. It's not unheard of for people to develop intolerances to foods as they go through life, so it could just be a coincidence that it has happened at the same time as the dose lowering.

My fingers are crossed you can get to the bottom of it!

    Hi lass

Thank you for replying. No they only gave me my tsh level. My tummy issue was borderline. But with the help of probiotics as recommended by the consultant i had it under control. I just thought it was a bit of a coincidence that 5 weeks after my dose was lowered i start getting problems again. I tried to phone specialist nurse but she is on annual leave but i am tempted to increase my fose in the meantime as i have a load of 25 mg pills. I go on holiday in 6 weeks and dont fancy putting up with this again during it xx

  • Tbh, it sounds like you have a separate issue with your digestive system that the higher dose of thyroxine was masking. So now that you're heading into what would be considered a more normal range, the issue is raising its head again.

Better to stay on the dose you've been given and get a blood test in a week or two to check your thyroid hormone levels, as that will be you 7 weeks after dose change. Then your consultant can see if the change is what they wanted.

But in the meantime, def head to the GP about the digestive issues. Because hiding the problem with high doses of thyroxine isn't going to fix it. And if it's a problem that could get worse without treatment, well, that's def not a road you want to head down I'm sure!
