Hi all

I’m having rai at Christie’s soon...those with little ones how long was it before you could go home to them? I’m dreading time away from them I had a little breakdown leaving them for my operation for 3 days don’t know how I will cope if it’s longer than that x

  • Hey there Sarah.

It's mostly in your hands. There is no usual time away, because it's different for everyone.

What you need to do is drink at least 2 litres of water a day to flush the excess through you faster. That way your radioactivity levels will drop faster as you pee it out, and the less restrictions you'll be given on release.

    Hope that helps,

    Lass

    Thanks Lass

mom thinking I could shower 5 time a day and drink huge amounts of water ? Haha x

  • Lol.

They do ask that you shower twice a day at my hospital, because of course it comes out in your sweat too. And drink what you can manage, just remember there is a maximum amount you can drink before you do more damage than good, as there's a limit to what your kidneys can handle.

However, you're going to be absolutely fine, and smash it like you've smashed everything before. You've totally got this!

    Hi Sarahjane87

I had RAI at Christie's last Oct, and had a 2 year old and a new born at the time. I went in on the Monday and had the pill at 16:00. I got the lowest dose 1100 and was out by lunch time on Wed, I had restrictions on seeing my little ones until the following Monday.

That was kinda my fault though because, once they told me I'd be going home on Tuesday after they took my measurements. I stopped drinking as much cordial as I was fed up of doing it. I think if I would have carried on I would have had fewer days of being away ( never mind, lesson learnt )

There is free wifi in the RAI rooms too so you could always Facebook Messenger / Skype video call your loved ones. Remember to shower twice a day and I just wore their scrubs, it was easier than dealing with radioactive clothes when I got to my parents.

There is a post where I uploaded pictures of the RAI rooms I'll see if I can find it and show you what the rooms look like.

    All the best

    Chris

    Hi all

i have RAI due to start in Sept.

ill be kept in for 4 days and also very saddened at the thought of not seeing my baby girl, who will be 6 months at the time.

has anyone had RAI in Brighton hospital?

I hope my room has a window!

    Have a great day

  • Hey English,

More often than not, if you call the nuclear medicine team who arranged the date for you, they can give you a tour of the sort of room you'll be staying in, as well as answer any questions you might have.

I looked through the RAI thread, but no one mentioned Brighton I'm afraid. But do give them a call and see if they can let you have a wee nosey before you go in proper.
